Warm Up: On a piece of paper, answer the following questions. Modern Day Transcendental Ideals 1.What Transcendental ideals are represented in Hill’s talk? How do you see these displayed? 2.What would Emerson think about this talk’s message? 3.What would Thoreau think about the talk?

Warm up: “From Walden” Review 1.Describe Thoreau’s house and neighbors. 2.Why did Thoreau want to move to the woods in lines 22-30? 3.What does he mean by “Spartan like”? 4.What is his critique in lines 33-35? What is his solution? 5. What is the overall theme of this passage?

Transcendentalist Discussion In “Civil Disobedience”, what are Thoreau's views on government? Why? How do those views relate to Emerson’s message in “Self Reliance”?
