p2 Barrier- using Slang/acronyms Teenager is using shortened words , text talk and slang words which the OAP is not familiar with, She can not understand the information she is being given. To over come the barrier- Formal communication could be used, this would mean that slang words would be avoided and the message could therefore be understood.

p2 Barrier- Health issues She is in pain, this is effecting her concentration and ability to communicate effectively, her pain may mean the information she says a little confused, the doctor will not be able to understand what is being said. To overcome the barrier- Be patient and calm, let the service user know they can take heir time to explain their symptoms. Paraphrasing could be used to repeat back what a person has said to ensure that you have understood the message. Closed questions could be used to keep the conversation short and simple to make it easier for the patient. Make them feel at ease and that help is at hand. This should calm them. Clarify points at a later date when the pain has subsided.

Transcript of the group conversation.

Example Transcript of the group conversation Teacher-Hello, this is the Hadrian health and social care class and today we are going to have a group conversation about the morel issue of plastic surgery. Should we grow old gracefully or is plastic surgery a good idea? Fatima- I think it’s a bad idea because It might effect people’s lives. Teacher- In what way might it effect their lives? Micheala-I think plastic surgery is not needed. Somia They could have the plastic surgery and regret it or the operation could go wrong. They have been some horrible pictures in the papers for example Lesley Ash and her over sized lips. Fatima-There have been some horrible cases, we have seen some plastic surgery disasters and some people that have taken it to the extreme such as Michael Jackson. Natalia- some people have said that they have got addicted to it. Hannah- I think that it’s good, it improves people’s lives as they feel and look better. If people don’t like the way they look it gives them an option to be able to change it. It will improve their confidence and most people are happy with the results. I think Katie Price looks better for it and she’s made her career out of it. Natalia- In a way it’s good and bad. Teacher- In what way? Natalia- Some people like it so want to have it. If they want to have it and will feel better then that’s fine. It’s good when people really need it for example if someone has been scarred or burnt. Somia- In these cases I agree it’s good to offer to patients. Fatima- me too, I think plastic surgery should be used after serious injuries to improve scarring and damage to the face and body. This will improve their confidence in public and help them to recover and socialise after the accident. Micheala- I do. Hannah- I think it’s up to the person having it done. It’s their body and they can look how they want, even if they don’t have scarring it’s ok to have it, they’re paying for it. Natalia- sometimes people want boob jobs because they have big ones that give them back ache or really small ones. I think if it makes them feel better it’s ok. Hannah-Yes I do too. Somia- When it’s done for vanity I don’t think it’s a good idea. They may not like the changes to their body or they might have felt pressure to have this done to look a certain way and conform to a stereotype of beauty. I don’t think it should be done for vanity just to try to create the look of a model but in cases where a person has scarring I think it is good. Teacher- so do you think Gok Wan is correct in promoting a healthy body image and encouraging people to love the bodies they have? Somia I think people should be happy with their bodies as they are. Micheala- I think that having plastic surgery is not good, you should be happy to look like yourself.
