12-6 Surface Areas and Volumes of Spheres

Spheres A sphere is a set of all points in space equidistant from a given point called the center. How would you define a radius of a sphere? How would you define a diameter of a sphere?

Surface Area of a Sphere The surface area of a sphere is four times the product of π and the square of the radius of the sphere. S.A. = 4πr 2

Examples Find the surface area of a sphere with a radius of 12cm. Find the surface area of a sphere with a diameter of 25 inches.

Volume of a Sphere The volume of a sphere is four thirds the product of π and the cube of the radius of the sphere. V = (4/3)πr 3

Examples Find the volume of the sphere with radius of 3. Find the radius to the nearest tenth. If the volume of the sphere is inches cubed. Find the surface area if the volume is meters cubed (round to the nearest tenth).
