A simple sentence A simple sentence has ONE independent clause. There are 4 types of simple sentences; SV SVV SSV SSVV

Process in reading sentences Find the action or state of being word. Don’t forget helping verbs! Ask Who or What (verb)? Hint: sometimes it helps to cross out prepositions and infinitives, they can NEVER have the sentences subject or verb in them.

Compound sentences A compound sentence has 2 or more independent clauses. There are 2 types of compound sentences I,cI I;I In creating or finding compound sentences, you are using 2 simple sentences and putting them together.

Clues to help me identify dependent clauses Subordinating conjunctions This is NOT a full list, the words show a relationship between the independent clause and the dependent clause.

Sequencing complex sentences If the dependent clause comes first- you have to have a comma. If the independent clause comes first- you don’t have to have a comma. Look at cue card 13
