DOMAIN NAMES AND THE ASSUMPTION OF CREDIBILITY BASED OFF OF EXTENSION Larry Wilson

Can anyone buy a domain name? Yes, all you need is an internet connection, and a site that sells them.

WHAT ABOUT CONTENT PER DOMAIN EXTENSION?.EDU and.GOV domain extensions are the only domain extensions that could potentially be viewed as credible sources right out of the gate due to being reserved for educational and government based organizations, and to be careful with.ORG domains as they are usually run by non-profit organizations that are mostly agenda based.

OUT OF THE WHOLE INTERNET, WHAT CAN BE TRUSTED? As of March 28 th 2015 the number of indexed pages on the entire internet is 4.59 billion pages. Equally as impressive, according to Howell (2014), the distance from the Sun to Pluto is 4.59 billion miles. The defining factor is you!

YOU CAN PUT A SITE ONLINE IN 1 HOUR OR LESS The stipulation on.EDU domain names being reserved for accredited institutions did not begin until October 29, 2001 by the U.S. Department of Commerce, making anyone that purchased a domain extension ending in.EDU is grandfathered in and can keep their domain name. This would infer that any domain name registered before this time could be anything, and as long as they purchaser continues to pay for it.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHO OWNS A DOMAIN AND WHEN IT WAS PURCHASED? “All registered domain names have an entry in a central database containing the personal contact information of the domain registrant. This database is known as the WHOIS database, and it is required by ICANN that all domains have valid information for WHOIS search.”

RESEARCH WHAT YOU RESEARCH Never trust a single source for definitive information, look in to who wrote and see what the cited from, or if they are an expert in their field.

WHO OPPOSES THIS VIEW? Those that make assumptions. Those that take what is read at face value.

SEE FOR YOURSELF!
