The Politics of Slavery

Slavery in the U.S. After Rev. War, northern states began to end slavery By 1790, more than 90% of enslaved African Americans lived in the South Northern economy based on industrial labor paid with wages Southern economy based on cash crops & slavery Slavery issue – property rights v. human rights Most Americans believed that property rights were protected by the Constitution

Compromise of 1850 CA population grew from 14,000 to 93,000 between 1848 and 1850 CA wanted to apply for statehood as a free state Senate debate over admitting CA as free state -John Calhoun (SC) threatens SC will leave Union -Webster (MA) opposes slavery, but will compromise -William Seward (NY) – no slavery, no compromise Henry Clay crafts a compromise

Parts of the Compromise of CA is admitted to Union as a free state 2. NM, UT are organized into territories and their people will decide the slavery issue 3. Fugitive Slave Act – made it a federal crime to assist escaped slaves 4. Slave trade was outlawed in District of Columbia (Washington DC), but slavery itself could still exist there.
