Consumer Rights & Responsibilities

Consumer Bill of Rights The consumer Bill of Rights was introduced by the U.S. President, John F. Kennedy in 1962.

The First 4 Basic Rights 1. To safety Your Rights Your Responsibilities - Product should not be dangerous - FDA (Food and Drug Admin.) and CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) enforce safety standards To use, care for, store and dispose of products safely

Your Responsibilities 2. To be informed Your Rights Your Responsibilities - Protect against false & misleading information - Advertising is not the most reliable source of information -To seek information and use it to make decisions - If a claim sounds too good to be true, it usually is - Nothing is ever free… somehow it is paid for by you

Your Responsibilities 3. To choose Your Rights Your Responsibilities - To be exposed to a variety of goods & services at competitive prices - To choose goods and services carefully - Shop around for best quality at lowest price

Your Responsibilities 4. To be heard Your Rights Your Responsibilities - You can complain if something is wrong with the product - To speak up and let likes and dislikes be known - Many companies have a consumer complaints dept. - If not settled, you can go to the BBB (Better Business Bureau)

The United Nations Assembly expanded the list in 1985 to include four additional rights: # 5. Redress or remedy (fair settlements) #6. Healthy environment #7. Consumer education #8. Satisfaction of basic needs

Frauds / Quackery Health quacks are people who sell useless or even harmful remedies. Be very skeptical of any offer that sounds too good to be true Watch for: - “secret” formulas - promises to fix things quick & easily - miracle testimonials - require advance payments - “money-back” guarantees - buy quickly due to limited availability
