MULTI-FLOW MAP Used to show CAUSE and EFFECT

The Event CAUSE EFFECT

Before you Begin! Remember that you can have as many Causes and Effects as needed. Do not limit yourself to the 3 boxes on the template. You can also create a Multi-flow Map using only the Causes and the Event, or the Event and the Effects.

The Event CAUSE

The Event EFFECT

Step #1 In the large center box write the Event being discussed. You can use a word, picture or symbol to represent the topic or concept.

Volcanic Eruptions CAUSE EFFECT

Step #2 Have the students discuss and fill-in the Causes of the event. Be specific and use details. Remember you can list as many Causes as necessary.

Plate Tectonics Molten Magma Extreme Pressure Volcanic Eruptions CAUSE EFFECT

Step #3 Have the students discuss and fill-in the Effects of the event. Be specific and use details. Remember you can list as many Effects as necessary.

Plate Tectonics Molten Magma Extreme Pressure Volcanic Eruptions Air Pollution From ash Loss of Life Destruction of Land, Property, and Habitats CAUSE EFFECT

Step #4 The outer rectangle is called the Frame of Reference. This encourages more reflective thinking on the topic. This is the opportunity to go into greater depth. The students are thinking about their thinking!

Step # 4 Suggestions Listed below are some sample questions that could be asked in the Frame of Ref: – How do you know the causes and effects of this event? –How does this information relate to the standard and objective? –Did a specific time period influence the causes and effects? –Where did you get your information?

How do you know the causes and effects of this event? Plate Tectonics Molten Magma Extreme Pressure Volcanic Eruptions Air Pollution From ash Loss of Life Destruction of Land, Property, and Habitats CAUSE EFFECT

Step #4 Have the students respond to the Frame of Reference (question or idea) within the rectangular outline. This is also a nice opportunity to have them share and discuss how they would answer the question(s)?

I know the causes and effects from what I’ve study in class, read independently, and viewed on television. Plate Tectonics Molten Magma Extreme Pressure Volcanic Eruptions Air Pollution From ash Loss of Life Destruction of Land, Property, and Habitats CAUSE EFFECT
