Facts Nearly 14 million people in the United States--1 in every 13 adults--abuse alcohol and/or are alcoholic. 22% of American adults are former drinkers. Every day, more than 700,000 people in the U.S. receive treatment for alcoholism. 40% of children who start drinking before the age of 15 will become alcoholics at some point in their lives, compared with 25% for those who begin drinking at age 17, and about 10% for those who begin drinking at ages 21 and 22.
