These are pictures of yard sales. Why do people have yard sales?

What is a yard sale? In the US, when people want to get rid of their junk for a little cash, they have yard sales. They put a sign up in their yard, maybe place an ad in the newspaper or on the Internet and sell things they no longer use. Often people have yard sales when they are getting ready to move from one place to another. Sometimes, you can find good stuff at yard sales at a good price. People sell everything from clothes, dishes and books to CDs, furniture and art.

1a Look at the things at the yard sale. Do you have any of these things at home? How long have you had them?

Amy: I want to keep the bear because I’ve had it since I was a baby. It has special meaning for me because Grandma gave it to me. I’ll give away the lion and tiger.

3. There are many things I’ve had since I was a child. 有很多自从我小时候就已经有了的东西。 since: conj. 自从 e.g. 这个座桥10年前就在这里了。 The bridge has been here since 10 years ago.

4. I don’t think I could sell them. 我认为我卖不掉他们。 I don’t think … (否定前移) I think/believe/suppose/imagine 等动词后的宾语从句的否定词要前移到主句中。 e.g. 我想我不认识你 I don’t think I know you. 我相信他不会来。 I don’t believe he will come.

5. It’s hard to say goodbye to certain things. 对某些东西道别是很难的事情。 It is + adj. + to do sth 做某事很 …… say goodbye to sb 对某人道别 say sorry to sb 对某人道歉 say thanks to sb 对某人道谢 e.g. 我认为跟他道歉不是很难的事情。 I don’t think it is hard to say sorry to him.

6. By the way 顺便问一句 in this way 就这样 on the way to someplace 在去某地的路上 e.g. 顺便问一句,那个玩具多少钱? By the way, how much is that toy? 就这样,他按时到达了学校。 In this way, he arrived at the school on time. 在去博物馆的路上,他丢了钱包。 He lost his wallet on the way to the museum.

7. I have had it for three years. 我已经拥有了它3年了。 终止性动词表示的动作极其短暂,不能持续, 所以,在现在完成时中一般不能和以since,for 等引导的表示一段时间的状语连用。 get, buy 在这种情况下用have 代替。 e.g. 我三年前买了这本杂志。 I bought the magazine three years ago. I have had the magazine for three years.

9. Old things really bring back sweet memories. 老东西真的能带回美好的记忆。 remember: v. 记得 memory: n. 记忆 e.g. 他有很好记忆力。 He has a good memory .

10. It’s true that we may never use some of these things again. 确实,有些东西我们不会再用了。 It’s true that … it 为形式主语,that 引导主语从句 我确实没有对他撒谎。 It’s true that I didn’t lie to him.

11. You can also give them away to kids or people who need them. 你可以把他们送给孩子们或者需要他们的人。 give away: 赠送 e.g. 我想把这些食物送给那些老人。 I want to give the food to the old men. people who need them 需要他们的人 who 引导定语从句, 修饰people e.g. 你认识那个给你这些钱的人么? Do you know the man who gave you the money?

12. You can have it for 75 cents. 你可以75美分买下它。 have it: buy it cent: 美分 100 cents is 1 dollar.

4. They don’t fit me anymore. 他们不再适合我了。 fit: v. 适合 e.g. 这鞋子不合我的脚。 The shoes don’t fit me. not … anymore: 不再 e.g. 我不会再穿这条裙子了。 I won’t wear the dress anymore. 老师不再生我们的气了。 The teacher isn’t angry with us anymore.
