The United Nations

 The United Nations was set up in 1945 by 50 nations who signed a Charter promising to abide by the aims of the organisation.  It was meant to provide an opportunity for nations of the world to work together to improve human rights and freedoms, maintain world peace and encourage social and economic progress.  The organisation has expanded from 50 nations to Current Membership

What does the United Nations do?  It encourages countries to solve their disputes peacefully  It encourages countries to support human rights and freedoms  It encourages social and economic progress, especially for poorer countries in the world  It gives a chance for countries to discuss world problems and co-operate in coming up with solutions.

The Five Main Organs of the United Nations

What are the UN Specialised Agencies? These are smaller organisations within the UN that “specialise” in skills and expertise to help meet the needs of member countries, especially developing nations.
