Drawing Conclusions Understanding why there isn ’ t always a right or wrong answer in Humanities

What is a conclusion? a position, opinion or judgment reached after consideration (thought)

Why do we do this? In Humanities we try to understand the past to understand the present (today). We look for information (facts) and try to understand why/how those things happened As a student you will be asked to take facts and make sense of them

You do this in your daily life all the time! Example You are supposed to meet your girlfriend after school but your Humanities teacher made you stay after school for detention. You text her but she doesn ’ t reply and the next day at school she doesn ’ t meet you during lunch. What conclusion can you draw?

Inferences drawing meaning from clues in the text without the author having to say it Example-"The sky was dark and cloudy so I took my umbrella." We can infer that it might rain even thought the text does not say that Fill in the table using the example

Activity 1: School Uniform Policy On days when the temperature falls to 12 degrees or below, students may, on top of their standard uniform, wear school overcoats and a scarf to keep themselves warm. Girls may wear long pants but not jeans. All these non- uniform items must be navy blue, black or burgundy, the same colors as girls ’ hair accessories. These non-uniform items are not allowed on days 13 degrees or above. Hair Accessories: navy blue, burgundy or black. Girls should use hair accessories of an appropriate color to tie up long hair. Other Accessories: a pair of the same stud earrings worn on the ear lobe are acceptable for girls. No earrings for boys. Necklaces, bracelets, etc are not part of the school uniform. If parents wish their child to wear them or special clothing items for religious or other reasons, please write to the principal. Makeup and Hair Coloring are not allowed.
