The basic Bat Facts By Grace

What is a Bat? Bats are mammals They give birth to live young They nurse their young They have fur They are warm blooded Bats are the only mammals that fly

Body of a Bat Bats have fingers like us Bat’s wings are made of membranes Bat’s Latin name is chiroptera Chiroptera means hand wing Bats are adapted in special ways according to where they live and what they eat

How do Bats help us? Bats pollinate flowers They eat insects They distribute seeds

Echolocation Echolocation is a series of high pitched clicks that bounces off of everything around the bats and sends sound waves back to the bat’s ears Bats have muscles in their ears that close when they send out the clicks so they won’t go deaf Echolocation is used for hunting,to avoid obstacles and predators

Microbats Microbats are the small insect eating bats Microbats live in caves and mines Microbats have small eyes and big ears Microbats use echolocation to locate their food Microbats eat fish, blood, insects, reptiles, other species and rodents

Megabats Megabats are the big fruit eating bats Megabats live in trees in the tropics Megabats have dog like faces Megabats have big eyes and small ears Megabats do not use echolocation Some megabats are called flying foxes because of their dog-like face
