Kiwi evolution!
Species unique to NZ…
Kiwi evolution Kiwi birds evolved to be flightless because: – NZ’s isolation from other birds and environments – Native bush environment – All food (worms, spiders, fallen seeds and fruit, larvae of beetles and cicadas, forest invertebrates) was on or in the ground, so no need to fly to catch food
– No ground predators to eat them (only land mammals were bats and seals). – Dogs, possums, stoats, ferrets and rats and other predators of the kiwi were only introduced to NZ when Maori and Pakeha arrived.
