Colonies Massachusetts Connecticut New Hampshire Rhode Island

Founded By? Massachusetts: John Winthrop, 1620 Connecticut: Thomas Hooker, 1636 New Hampshire: John Mason, 1625 Rhode Island: Roger Williams, 1636

Why were they Founded? Massachusetts: Religious freedom for Puritans Connecticut: Religious and economic freedom. New Hampshire: To escape from constriction with religious and economic rules Rhode Island: Religious freedom

Geography The New England region was hot and challenging for farming There were many forests in the region which helped lead to finding natural resources like lumber Close to the coast

Economic Conditions Since there wasn’t suitable soil for farming the New England Colonies used their other resources like forests and water. They used mills for grain and lumber. They also used their connection to the coast for promoting trade.

Religion Role The main reason people came to the colonies was for religious freedom. -where settlers were able to practice their religion without being disturbed by officials The Puritans started to bring over their religion to the New World. They had strong beliefs for God and the Puritan leaders and churches greatly influenced society at the time.

Facts The people in the colonies were close because they practiced the same religion The colonies had long and harsh winters with a short growing season. There weren’t many slaves like other colonies because of lack of farming. The Puritans were starting to lose their power in the New England area in the 1700’s
