What Are We Doing? Survey of households. Full count of population in group quarters and outdoor locations Census Survey

Full Count vs. Survey 1985 and 1995 Special Census –Full count of every person living in Maricopa County Census Survey –Representative sample of households in Maricopa County, to derive a population estimate. Cost Difference –Approximately $31 million for full count. –Approximately $7.5 million for Survey Census Survey

Where Are We Doing This? Each city, town, Indian community and unincorporated area of Maricopa County is being surveyed Census Survey

Who Will Get a Survey? It is the person’s address, not the individual personally, that may be chosen as part of the scientifically- determined sample. About 1 in every 13 households in Maricopa County will receive a survey from the U.S. Census Bureau Census Survey

What Types of Questions Will Be Asked? How many people were living here on September 1, 2005? Age and sex of individuals living in household. Type of residence. No economic or other demographic data will be requested. Survey is short and simple. –Takes about 6 minutes to complete Census Survey

What Will the Survey Tell Us? Total population. Number of people in housing units. Total housing units. Total occupied housing units. Number of people living in group quarters and in outdoor locations (homeless) Census Survey

How Accurate Is the Survey? Sample chosen so estimated population is within two percent of actual population 95 percent of the time, or 19 times out of 20. –95% confidence interval with plus or minus 2% error Census Survey

How Safe Is the Information Residents Provide? By federal law, the Census Bureau can’t share your answers with others, including: –Welfare agencies. –Immigration authorities. –White House. –IRS. –Courts, FBI, police, or military. Since the first census in 1790 the Census Bureau has never violated this policy Census Survey
