Map Projections

Globe

The most accurate representation of the earth's surface is found on a Globe.

Mercator Projection The Mercator projection is a cylindrical map projection. It became the standard map projection for nautical purposes because of its ability to represent lines of constant true bearing or true course It has the correct shape of the continents.

Azimuthal or Polar Projection An Azimuthal projection shows the earth centered in such a way that a straight line coming from the center to any other point represents the shortest distance. Used most with air navigation

Great Circle Route Great circle is the shortest possible distance between any two places on the earth’s surface. Ships and planes usually follow the curve of the great circle.

Robinson Projection Mostly Used Less distortion than the Mercator Projection. The Robinson projection is a map projection popularly used since the 1960s to show the entire world at once. It was specifically created in an attempt to find the good compromise to the problem of readily showing the whole globe as a flat image.
