Basic Reading Guide “Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God.” Found on page Written by Johnathan Edwards From the mid 1700’s. Background information on the next slide.

Background Info Jonathan Edwards delivered the sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" at a time when colonists started to find answers to life’s questions through science rather than religion. Some Puritans were abandoning their faith and not attending regular church services. In order to boost church membership, Puritan officials had softened the rules and, in Edwards’s mind, allowed less-than-desirable candidates to join the church. Note: The sermon provides a threatening feeling throughout the entirety of it, so some may have felt more compelled to attend church services after readnig it

Reading We will begin the reading on page 106 in the Literature book We will be popcorn reading throughout the story, so make sure that you’re paying attention. Try to put yourself in this situation and comprehend where the author is coming from.

Writing How do you think those who were skipping church would have reacted to the sermon? Would it convince them to attend church? Would it convince you? Take 5-10 minutes to write about this in a Google Doc(one paragraph), and submit it to Google Classroom when finished.

Post Story Questions. Talk with the person next to you about the answers to these questions. 1.According to the sermon, what keeps sinners out of hell? 1.According to Edwards, how can sinners obtain salvation?
