Monochromatic Still Life Painting Angela Champion Instructor

Problem You are to create a still life painting using a monochromatic color scheme. Your choice media are tempera or watercolor. Your painting has to be informed by your choice of 3 artists listed later in the research.

Research What is a still life? What are the purposes for creating still life? Choose from Paul Cezanne, Pieter Claesz, or Vincent VanGogh and: A) find an example of their still life painting. B) Describe their style C) explain what main Principle of Design they used. D) Interpret the meaning of the still life. E) Judge the still life.

Idea Generation After you have learned to draw using observational drawing you will use Mrs. Champions still life or one of your choice you will sketch out multiple views (2). You will also learn to paint using hue, tint, and shade.

Test After sketching out your still life views, get a practice piece of paper and try your hand at painting hue, tint, and shade on part of it.

Final Solution Apply your ideas (sketch) to good paper and your range of values with one color to your painting.

Evaluation What worked well? What didn’t? What could have had more practice with? How did your research deepen your understanding of still life? What connections did you have to your research?
