Chapter 2 – Early People: Migration and Adaptation

Early People: Migration and Adaptation Read the Kansa Story of Creation on page 26. As a class act out the story. One person reads the story while the others perform the actions. What does this say about how the Kansa viewed their past?

Early People Define the following words: Oral traditions Artifacts Migration Adaptation

Early People Where did the Big Game Hunters come from? What sent them south? What did they hunt? How was the climate of Kansas different from how it is today? What don’t we know about them? What one interesting thing do we know about them?

Early People How long did it take for the climate to change? What problems would this have created for these people? How come people were able to survive this climate change?

Early People What is technology? How did the native people obtain new technology? What were some new things the people received? How did these help them live better?

Early People How Do We Know This? Read the article on Page 29 of the textbook. How do archaeologists decide how ancient people use to live? What is relative dating? What is absolute dating? What does the word “infer” mean?

Early People Look at the activity on pages 30-31 With a partner read the chart. Decide on an interpretation for the clues for Posthole pattern and Digging tools. Share with the class.

Early People Describe the home of a Village Farmer. What crops did they grow? What were their tools made from? How do we know they were successful? What evidence of trade do we see?

Early People Where is the Money? Page 32 Explain how the natives purchased items. Be sure to use the words currency and barter.

Early People How are the Historic Tribes different from the tribes that have been in Kansas for a very long time. How were these tribes different? What did they share? Where were horses brought to the Plains? How did they change the way of life here?

How did the exploration of the American explorers contribute to the resettlement of the Native American tribes? What President pushed for the Indian Removal Act? What was the Indian Removal Act? Why did he want the Indian Removal Act?

Read the two points of view about the Indian Removal Act on page 54. How did President Jackson view this law? How did Chief John Ross view this law?

Who was Isaac McCoy and how is he related to the Indian Removal Act? What was Isaac McCoy’s goal for the Native Tribes? Who were the emigrant Indians and where did they live?

Describe how the Emigrant Indians lived after they were moved. Look at the picture on page 56. Read the two selections and answer the questions that are found in the paragraphs.

Look at the letter on page 57. What does it mean to “transcribe” primary source documents. How is this done? Answer the “What do you think?” section.

What were the missionaries trying to do? How did the Native Americans react to the work of the missionaries? What things did the missionaries do that would help the children? What things did the missionaries do that could hurt the children?

Complete the Activity on page 59.
