SCBA Mask Confidence Becoming confident in your equipment

SCBA mask confidence  This program is in no way offered as a full respiratory protection program, rather a suggested training to meet specific competency requirements set forth in OSHA CFR and the other applicable NFPA standards.

SCBA mask confidence  This program will provide a detailed training simulation that reinforces personal proficiency while emphasizing standardized emergency techniques to be initiated when encountering a sudden hazardous event on the fire ground.

Why do I need this class?  Yearly requirement to have SCBA refresher.  Allows you to know what your limitations are and how to overcome them.  You depend on the operation and your ability to operate your SCBA in stressful situations.

What will we be doing?  Short class room session discussing SCBA operations.  Discuss way to make your profile smaller and how to maneuver in tight situations.  Go complete a SCBA mask confidence course while on air.

Basic Skills Needed  The 4 most critical actions in each of these situations are:  1:Remain CALM  2:Notify your partner/command  3:Activate your PASS alarm  4:Search for/find and exit

Basic SCBA Emergencies  Ripped or Severed Hose  Cracked, Broken or Damaged Lens  Air from Regulator Discharging Uncontrollably  Audible Leak from Hose Connection at the Cylinder Connection  Face piece Removal  Air Supply Stoppage  Early Low pressure Alarm Activation / Decreased Air Flow  Depleted Air Supply

The course  Follow the rope into the building  There are knots approximately every 20 feet with a set of smaller knots behind the main knot telling you how far you have gone.  The knots will allow you the ability to tell command where you are inside the building in case of emergency.

The course  When the rope runs out you will find a hose line.  You need to locate a coupling nearest to you and figure out which way is out.  Follow the hose line through the remainder of the course until an instructor tells you your out.

L.C.A.N. Report  You will be required to provide 1 L.C.A.N. report while going through the course.  L - Location (Where you are inside the building.)  C – Conditions (what are the current condition at your location.)  A – Actions (what are you doing right now and what are you going to do next.)  N – Needs (what do you need?)

Obstacles  Some of the obstacles are small and very confining.  Stay calm and work through them, without braking the prop.

Problems  If you encounter a problem slow down and catch your breath.  Talk to your partner and see if they can find a way to get through the problem and talk you through it.  Ask for Help

Problems  If your low air alarm sounds tell command you location and 2 full air bottles will be brought to you.  If you run out of air you have failed the course and will have to try again.  If you do not know where you are we can not bring you new bottles.

Skills Reinforced  Reduced Profiling  Communication Partner / Command  Accountability  Confidence in your ability

Thanks  Timothy E. Sendelbach for designing most of the props used in this course.
