Comenius Meeting in Birmingham 7-14 May 2014

Project: „Welcome to Europe“ Vocational College for Business and Administration 2-year full-time course Preparation time: 8 hours Subjects involved: IT, English

7-14 May 2014 Situation You and your friend Paul from Denver, Colorado in America have been chatting for years. Next summer Paul is going to graduate from High School and is planning to do a trip around Europe. As he has never been to Europe so far and doesn’t have a clue what is going on in the ‘Old World’, he requires a lot of information about the different states.

7-14 May 2014 The presentation should include some of the following aspects: Facts and figures/ geography Famous sights Food/ special dishes Culture/ youth culture Sports Famous people Career opportunities for young people

7-14 May 2014 Assignments: Please work in groups: 1.Chose a European country. Create a PPP and an information sheet which are supposed to be sent to Paul by . 2.Create a „Jeopardy“ (Jeopardy template is provided by IT teacher, maximum of 4 jokers). 3.Present the PPP to the class. 4.Motivate your fellow students to take part in your „Jeopardy“ with questions about the country you have chosen.

What about creativity??? ! 1.Selecting interesting and relevant facts about a country from the huge amount of information on the internet. 2.Arranging an appealing and informative PPP. 3.Giving an enjoyable oral presentation 4.Playing „Jeopardy“

7-14 May 2014 Evaluation of the project: Welcome to Europe 1. „Be prepared for the future“  Students learned a lot about different countries  Future importance of Europe was pointed out  Migration experience of some students became evident/was valuable  Further interest in European countries was aroused ( elections 2014)  Variety of key competences was promoted (social, communicative, IT, language)

2. General conclusion  Motivating for students and teachers  Students have to take responsibility (efficient work in groups, design different products, organize communicative situation in class)  Makes durable knowledge possible  Takes time, but pays 7-14 May 2014

3. Jeopardy (creative learning/technique)  play is how children learn, it is fun (not only the jokers)  motivates the students because of the competitive character of the game (want to be winners)  guarantees a high level of attentiveness  makes it easier to keep sth in mind because it is a revision of essential facts (durable knowledge)  gives students a feedback about how much has been learned  shows the students their level of performance  improves talent for organization  last but not least: the students improve their IT skills (although the jeopardy template was provided)
