Files and Folders A folder holds subfolders and files. File name: name.extention  Text file: (by notepad):.txt  Word file: old version.doc Word 2010.docx  Executable files:.exe  Web source file:.html, htm The file type determines the program used to open it: default programs Microsoft Office 2010-Illustrated

Files and Folders Absolute path (full path) includes the drive letter: C:\Program Files\Windows Relative path: Its relative to the current folder. Microsoft Office 2010-Illustrated

Launch a program Click the program: Click the program icon if it is on the desktop Click Start button  click the program if it is on the start menu Click start button  click All Programs  click the program Search the program  click it to run Microsoft Office 2010-Illustrated

Open a data file Click the data file and it will be opened by the associated program if its file type is known to the system. Click the associated program and use the Open command in the File tab. Microsoft Office 2010-Illustrated

File Selection In Windows Explorer Click and drag Control key (Ctrl) + mouse  Select multiple items Shift key + mouse  Select a range of items Microsoft Office 2010-Illustrated

Copy, Cut, Past, Move, Delete, Undelete Right click the file and use the pop-up menu Use drag and drop Cut + Paste  Move Microsoft Office 2010-Illustrated

Drag and Drop Both source and destination On the same drive  Move On different drives  Copy Drag and drop a file to the recycle bin (usually on drive C) If on the same drive (usually drive C)  Move If on different drives  Permanently delete the file Microsoft Office 2010-Illustrated

Open, Close, Save, Save As… These commands are in programs, usually under the File tab Save  save to the same file Save As…  save to a file with a different name In Office programs, auto save option Microsoft Office 2010-Illustrated
