Oregon Response to Intervention Vision: Every child in every district receives the instruction that they need and deserve…every day. The “How To” for Implementation Cadre 9 DIT Initial Training November 4 & 5 th, 2013 Eugene, Oregon

Oregon Response to Intervention Targets Build awareness about the successful stages of implementation Build skills in using the OrRTI Implementation Guidance Plan to support district implementation

Oregon Response to Intervention Successful Implementation “Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.” Steve Jobs

Stages of ImplementationFocusStageDescription Exploration/Ado ption Decision regarding commitment to be apart of the OrRTI Project. Commitment to adopt the use of the essential components of RTI. InstallationDevelop standards for core program, assessment, & data based teaming systems so that successful implementation can take place and be supported (develop plan). Initial Implementation Try out the practices, work out details, learn and improve before expanding to other contexts. Full Implementation Expand the program/practices to other locations, individuals, times- adjust from learning in initial implementation. Continuous Improvement Make it easier, more efficient. Embed within current practices. Work to do it right! Work to do it better! Should we do it! MIBSLI

Stages of ImplementationFocusStageDescription Exploration/Ado ption Research where to get your brakes fixed: Price, location, trustworthiness etc. Installation Order the materials, properly trained technician, appropriate equipment to do the work, time to do the work, be able to generalize to all kinds of cars. Initial Implementation The store will prepare for your visit: schedule staff, have parts & equipment ready & schedule the work bay and begin installing your brakes, Full implementation Customer is ready to take the car out and drive it. Continuous Improvement Regular checks on how much brake pads are left and noticing of any anomalies. Work to do it right! Work to do it better! Should we do it!

These stages are recursive Setbacks at one stage move us back to the previous stage Apply for PBIS New District Initiative Today is a book study? “We already do that.” Violate Norms Vote coach off Be on time Go to a PLC Ignore e- mails Go to Book Study Dominate conversation Snow Day! Late for meeting Attend District PD Ignore Data File Grievance Change Practice Have a “AHA!” Prep for Meeting New State Initiative

Oregon Response to Intervention Leadership is Key Expectations (Standards of Practice) Professional development & support Inspect what you expect (Fidelity)

Oregon Response to Intervention OrRTI Implementation Guidance Plan Steps Expectations 1. Does the district have standards of practice developed? 2. Does the district have a professional development plan? PD 3. Does the district conduct initial & on-going PD? PD 4. Does the district have & use fidelity measures/plan? Fidelity 5. Does the district staff implement the standards of practice for each RTI component? Fidelity 6. Does the district staff implement the standards of practice for each RTI component? Expectations, PD, & Fidelity Why: Assists in building, implementing, and sustaining a RTI system

Oregon Response to Intervention Clarity around expectations “Standards of Practice”

Oregon Response to Intervention Definition of Standards of Practice A set of expectations/standards that you set to ensure quality performance/care.

Oregon Response to Intervention Standards of Practice CoreUniversal Screening 100% Meetings TimeLogistics MaterialsUse of ScreenerProcess Instructional Strategies

Oregon Response to Intervention Develop Your Standards of Practice As a DIT you are responsible for developing your standards of practice –That’s the “easier” part! –How are you going to pass the baton to get them into place? That’s the “harder” part!

Oregon Response to Intervention Partner Talk In two sentences....what do you think makes implementing standards of practice difficult?

Oregon Response to Intervention Knowledge doesn’t always lead to change Lessons learned from other fields –Knowing what to do doesn’t always ensure that we do it. Maternity nurses in India: mentors Pilots: urgency Doctors & hand washing: barriers

Oregon Response to Intervention What can make new standards hard to establish? Anesthesia versus Antiseptic

Minimize the Implementation Dip Installation sustain

Oregon Response to Intervention How do we pass the baton? Professional Development/Knowledge –On going support/Coaching Fidelity/Checklists

Oregon Response to Intervention Professional Development Talk Time Review the PD Guidance Document –Place a green dot by the items that you believe your district is strong in conducting –Place a red dot by the items that you believe your district is weak in conducting Compare with your neighbor

Oregon Response to Intervention Fidelity

Oregon Response to Intervention Fidelity Talk Time Review the Fidelity Guidance Document –Place a green dot by the items that you believe your district is strong in conducting –Place a red dot by the items that you believe your district is weak in conducting Compare with your neighbor
