Intro Your friend leaves you a message about your vacation plans. They listened to your answering and left this message. Your friend does not speak English very well. YOUR FLIGHT DEPARTS CHICAGO AT 5 PM TOMORROW YOU WILL BE IN LONDON BY 8 AM IN THE MORNING YOU MUST CALL THE AIRLINE TO CONFIRM THIS CHANGE. 1.When is the plane leaving, today or tomorrow? 2.When are you supposed to call the airline? 3.What can happen if words are translated to paper in a different way than they are intended?

Numeric expression- A mathematical sentence without an equal sign. Made up of numbers, grouping symbols and operations. Algebra – A language of symbols. Algebraic expression – an expression where variables and numbers are joined by any combination of the four basic operations (+, -, x, /). Variable – a placeholder for any value. Any letter (n, m, j, x) can be used to represent an unknown quantity in an expression.

Objective: Students will translate words into algebraic expressions.

1.John biked 8 miles less than Zack. If Zack bikes m miles, what algebraic expression represents the number of miles John bikes? 2. Alex types 13 words per minute faster than Michelle. If Michelle types t words per minute, what algebraic expression represents the number of words per minutes that Alex types? M-8 T + 13

3. Smith wireless charges three-fifths of the sum of twenty-five and the number of outbound call, g, for their cell phone service. Write an expression to find the cost of cell phone service. 4. Martin rode his bike 17 miles shorter than four times the distance Mike rode, r. Write an expression to find the distance Martin rode.

5. Cornet Cable charges $32.50 a month for basic cable television. Each premium channel, p, selected costs an additional $4.95 per month. Write an expression to find the cost of cable service. 6. Jack and his five friends split thirty fewer skittles than 4 bags of skittles, s. write an expression to find out how many skittles each person received.
