States of matter and their properties
States of Matter
There are 4 different states of matter.
Some substances may exist in more than one state Example: water
The four states are: liquid, gas, solid, and plasma
Solids
A solid has a definite shape and volume.
The particles in a solid are placed very close because there is a great amount of attraction between them.
Solid particles have very little, if any motion.
There are two types of solids
Crystalline particles are arranged in a repeating pattern of rows. Ex. Diamond, ice particles are arranged in a repeating pattern of rows. Ex. Diamond, ice
Amorphous particles have no particular order. Ex.rubber, wax
Liquid
A liquid has definite volume but takes the shape of the container it is in.
The particles of a liquid have some space in between them which allows them to flow and move.
Liquid particles have a lot of motion
Properties of Liquids Viscosity is a liquids resistance to flow. Honey has a lot of viscosity, but water has a small amount of viscosity.
Surface tension is a force that acts on the particles at the surface of a liquid This property allows liquids to form drops
Gas
A gas does not have definite shape or volume
Gas particles are very spaced out because they have little attraction between them
Gas particles are in constant motion
Plasma
Plasma does not have a definite shape or volume. Example: stars, fire, lightening
The particles in plasma have been separated from one another.
Plasmas can conduct electricity!
