The Six Contemporary Perspectives of Psychology Webquest Psychology- Chapter 1 Mr. MacLaughlin

Introduction  Psychology uses one of six contemporary perspectives to explain human behavior.  During this activity, you will explore and attempt to explain one of these six contemporary perspectives.  Additionally, you will create power point slides, and consult various psychological sites.  Before you panic and say -"but this is not a computer class!", let me reassure you that this will be as easy as creating a word document and much more fun.

Step 1  For each component, you will review information about a perspective of psychology by reading the information links included under that section.  Then, consult the text for further information about this perspective  If you haven’t yet read pp , do so now. This will summarize the six present-day theories of psychology.  Your group number will be responsible for the corresponding theory on the next slide.

Step 1 (Cont’d) 1. Bio-psychological Approach 2. Behavioral Approach 3. Psychoanalytic Approach 4. Humanistic Approach 5. Cognitive Approach 6. Socio-cultural Approach

Step 2  Your group will be asked to create a multi-media presentation for their particular theory.  Your multi-media presentation should represent your theory in the best manner possible.  Your presentation should create a slogan that captures the essence of the theory. For example, “Think before you leap.” could represent cognitive psychology. (GROUP #5 CANNOT USE THIS SLOGAN!)  The slogans can be completely original, parodies of famous sayings, or even takeoffs from commercials.

Step 2 (Cont’d)  Your group needs to create at least five power point slides that will explain the perspectives.  Then, you are to choose key words for each approach. Students should display what their approach is by using words and pictures from magazines, as well.

Step 3  Each group is to have the following individuals 1.Two “slide coordinators” whose responsibility it is to coordinate the slides with your presentation 2.Two “poster coordinators” whose responsibility it is to coordinate the poster with pictures that represent your theory. Your poster and slide presentation should also include your slogan.

The Approaches  Biological Perspective Biological Perspective Biological Perspective  Behaviorist Perspective Behaviorist Perspective Behaviorist Perspective  Psychoanalytic Perspective Psychoanalytic Perspective Psychoanalytic Perspective  Humanistic Perspective Humanistic Perspective Humanistic Perspective  Cognitive Perspective Cognitive Perspective Cognitive Perspective  Socio-cultural Perspective Socio-cultural Perspective Socio-cultural Perspective

The Product  Your group final project should answer the question “How does the ___________ perspective explain behavior?”  An outside observer should be able to look at the elements of your presentation and be able to answer this essential question.
