ACADEMIC ENGLISH PRESENTATION CLASSROOM CLIMATE ZİŞAN KONAN / 010211012 Advisor: TUĞBA BOZKURT ŞEKER Date:28.03.2014

According to research and analysis, class environment and teacher’s attitude are most important factor that affects student’s success.   Environment= There are people and alive things.

SCHOOL CLIMATE and CLASSROOM CLIMATE There are certain habits of pupils. They learn these habits from their family

The habits can finish with teachers’ and schools’ help. If teachers and the school work together the pupils will improve quickly. Pupil=student improve=develop

CREATING A PLEASANT CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT Classroom relationship  Teachers should be supportive

Teachers must be balanced

Teachers should know the pupils very well.

 A number of ways making this easier can be the following 1-) Ask pupils’ names to learn them.

2-) Teachers can pin picture of the pupils’ on her/him desk. 3-) Have a list of names with the pupıl’s photos on the teacher’s desk

4-) Teachers should try to remember the pupils’ names and their faces. 5-) Teachers should learn what the pupils like and not like. They should learn everything about the pupils.

If the pupil does not interest in lesson, this method will be helper to solve the problem.

THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT The class should be cheerful. The teacher can hang some materials on the class’s wall.

School can be created in a clean environment. It must be a quiet environment.

According to some authors; ıf the number of the pupils is low, the class may be more disciplined and warm.

BORICH(1996) DEFINES THREE TYPES OF CLASSROOM CLIMATE   1-) Competitive 2-) Cooperative 3-) Individualistic

1-) In a competitive classroom  The race for the right answers.  They play group games, because there is a competition.  Competition may increase the success.  Pupil’s self-confidence increases. Self-confidence= Ego

2-) In a cooperative classroom  There are creative ideas  Pupils defend their ideas.  There are debate and exchange of ideas.  Group works can motivate the pupils.  If a class does not manage well , the teacher will loose the class’s control.

3-) The types of individual  Self-testing is important for pupils.  The purpose of teachers, giving task and watching the pupils.  Teachers do not interfere.  Teachers do not share the results with class.  It can be not enough, because it’s individual.

TEACHER EXPECTATION WHAT ARE TEACHERS EXPECTATION?

Teachers’ expectations are so important. Teachers want their pupils to be responsible. When they want to this, teachers make a warm classroom climate.  Teachers try to encourage the pupils. Encourage= Foster

Negative teacher expectations; Low expectations reduce the potential and limits their capacity. Everybody doesn’t have the some capacity. If a student has a low potential , the teacher should not wait for the student to be a philosopher.

According to Rosenthal and Jacobson's researches, If teachers have high expectation, their students will be more successful.

Strategies for avoiding negative expectations Teachers shouldn’t be prejudiced. They should try to learn all students and they should be in a communication with the pupils. Teachers should be objective, tolerant, and warm-blooded. Prejudiced=Biased

Summary; Classroom climate is that teachers’ atmosphere. Teachers shouldn’t show all the negative status to class. The another most important thing is teachers’ enthusiasm. The pupils can understand classes easily with materials. Teachers shouldn’t discriminate between pupils.
