Yesterday… R & H Parents F1 F2

So, what does it mean? R&H

Gene A section of a chromosome Your genes are in pairs. R & H

Allele 1 part of the gene pair (1 allele from Mom + 1 allele from Dad = 1 gene pair) R & H

The stronger allele, which results in the dominant trait Dominant R & H

The weaker allele, which only results in the recessive trait when there is a pair of recessive alleles Recessive R & H

Scientists show dominant and recessive alleles, using letters. B = dominant b = recessive R & H

Pairs of letters are called genotypes. These are the 3 main genotypes: BB Bb bb R & H

The dominant allele for ___ gives you ___. Hair color = dark hair (brown or black) Eye color = dark eyes (brown or black) And lots more! R & H

The recessive allele for ___ gives you ___. Hair color = light hair (red or blond) Eye color = light eyes (blue or green) And lots more! R & H

In Mendel’s Experiment Dominant: green peas, purple flowers, smooth pods, tall plants The dominant alleles covered up the other parent’s recessive alleles. That’s why the F1 generation only had green peas, purple flowers, smooth pods, and tall plants! R & H

Design 2 t-shirts (pg. 32) Design a t-shirt for dominant & a t-shirt for recessive. Decorate the shirt with a slogan, a picture, or both. Must use color. Below each shirt, explain why the design shows what you know about dominant and recessive alleles (2 sentences each). R & H
