Engine Terminology The 5 Piece Top End Lesson 5 March 2008
# 1 - Head with Valve Ports The cylinder head forms the primary top seal of the cylinder. This component has a formed combustion chamber and houses valve components and camshaft (where designed to do so). The head bolts directly to the block ‘deck’. There are cast passages in the head that allow for the flow of incoming fuel charges or exiting exhaust gasses.
#2 Valves Valves form the doors to the combustion chamber. They act as secondary top end seals
#3 Springs Valve springs close the valves
# 4 Camshaft The camshaft opens all intake and exhaust valves. It is the breathing controller. Breathing (event) Control YouTube - Single Valvetrain Simulation
#5 Camshaft Drive Mechanism The Camshaft Drive Mechanism connects the camshaft to the crankshaft Timing belt most popular method used in engines today
Alternate cam drive mechanisms Timing Chain and Sprockets (gears) Timing Gears
