Purposes for Introductions The introduction grabs the reader’s attention. clearly implies an organizational structure of the paper. includes support that is specific and relevant and provides a clear, connected lead-in to a paper’s main idea or thesis. includes a thesis that is stated or implied. This slide is taken from the Introduction Scoring Guide. Students should have come up with these purposes during the previous discussion. Point out any purposes that are the same but worded differently. If they have missed something, that purpose should be discussed.

Bad Introductions I hope you enjoy… Hi, my name is… You are going to learn about… This essay/letter is about… I am going to tell you about… There are three reasons… Students use the above phrases when they don’t know other strategies for writing introductions. Discuss why the above phrases are ineffective. Discuss the ineffectiveness of over-used or clichéd phrases. This list is not all-inclusive, nor a set of rules. This is a set of discussion points. This would make a good chart and can be added to as the year progresses.

Great Introductions The HOOK Scenario/Anecdote: The writer provides hypothetical or personal examples to illustrate the topic. Inquiry/Questioning: The writer asks thought-provoking, maybe even edgy, questions to capture the reader’s interest. Statistic: An interesting fact related to your topic can be a powerful way to show your reader why your essay is important. Preparatory Definition/Explanation: The writer defines or explains the subject before discussing it in detail.

Next… Transition (or connect your hook) to your Thesis with a Lead-in or Bridge sentence For example: Are you tired of being bullied at school because you don’t have the cool clothes? Many schools are trying to stop bullying like this from happening by choosing to have school uniforms.

How to end an Introduction The last sentence in your introduction MUST state the purpose of your paper! In other words… it is your THESIS. School uniforms provide benefits for students, parents and teachers by reducing bullying, putting less peer pressure on people to buy expensive clothes, and making them easier to identify.

The Perfect Introduction What are the three parts of a perfect introduction? Are you tired of being bullied at school because you don’t have the cool clothes? Many schools are trying to stop bullying like this from happening by choosing to have school uniforms. School uniforms provide benefits for students, parents and teachers by reducing bullying, putting less peer pressure on people to buy expensive clothes, and making them easier to identify.

The Perfect Introduction Answer: Hook+Lead-in/Bridge+Thesis Are you tired of being bullied at school because you don’t have the cool clothes? Many schools are trying to stop bullying like this from happening by choosing to have school uniforms. School uniforms provide benefits for students, parents and teachers by reducing bullying, putting less peer pressure on people to buy expensive clothes, and making them easier to identify.

Your Turn Directions: Write an introductory paragraph that begins with a hook and ends with a thesis.*

HOOK+ LEAD-IN+BRIDGE In 2011, there were 34 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide and 300,000 of this number were from Botswana, which has the second highest HIV prevalence in the world with 24% and there were 5,800 HIV/AIDS deaths in 2009. However, in the youngest age groups the number of HIV infections has decreased because 95% of the population of Botswana has now access to treatment thanks to the pharmaceutical companies Merck and Bristol-Myers Squibb and Botswana’a government also invested money.

Global Classrooms (same steps…different names) HOOK Topic Sentence: What is the topic and why does it matter to the world? LEAD-IN BRIDGE Introduce your country and it’s history regarding the topic and/or Committee Why does your country care about this topic? How does the issue affect your country? THESIS What is your country’s position on the issue? CLASSWORK: WRITE YOUR HOOK/TOPIC SENTENCE.

If you didn’t finish in class… You have homework! Introduction Paragraph Due November 26th
