Film Trailer Conventions  State which forms of communication you have used to promote your film.  We have used 3 different forms of communication in order to help promote our film ‘The Hunter’. This consists of one film trailer, one magazine and one poster. All three forms of communication are highly effective in order to appeal to our target audience and our secondary audience.  State the purpose of your film trailer; to advertise the film in a cinema, TV, Internet, etc (using different platforms).  The purpose of our film trailer was to advertise our film on a global level in order to appeal to as many fans as possible and be able to have a wider audience. We plan to show our film trailer in cinema, on the T.V, internet and other platforms to have as many potential fans as possible.  State what your genre is and how it use or challenges these conventions (Hybrid?). What iconography did you use to establish genre for your target audience?  The genre for our film ‘The Hunter’ is crime/ thriller hybrid. Our film was unconventional because we had a female protagonist, which goes against the usual conventions. We took this inspiration from films such as Kill Bill and Columbiana. Our main female protagonist is skilful and mentally unstable which again shows why our film is unconventional. Women are typically seen as the ‘Damsel in distress’ who needs saving by the male hero. We went against these conventions so our film would stand out.

More on trailer…  Our narrative is postmodern because the theme of our film trailer is challenging due to a number of reasons. Our main character is a female protagonist who goes against the normal role a women plays in a crime/thriller films. They would usually be the damsel in distress who needs saving from the male hero, however we have questioned this by giving her a role that is usually seen as the male hero role. We wanted to do this because we were influenced by both Kill Bill and Columbiana and they have similar ideas to us. This is the main postmodern change we have made to our film which makes our film unconventional because we have gone against the genre and questioned it. We have chosen a font that is sharp and edgy which reflects our main protagonists personality well because she is fragile but very dangerous and unpredictable. The fonts links at the narrative well and hints at the vendetta our main character has well. If we chose a softer and lighter font it wouldn’t work, because it wouldn’t match with our femme fetal. Although this could work if we were deliberately trying to be ironic but we weren’t. We took influence from the violent aspect of Kill Bill and how this affected the main character and how it influenced the narrative. We like the idea of the main character wanting to desperately take vengeance for what has happened to her in her life.

Directors Commentary  Our trailer is very much an unconventional trailer from our female protagonist to our unique editing styles. We challenged the genre in many ways but kept the sound and titles fairly conventional because it worked better for us. They were unique and were not boring however we felt it was best that both our sound and titles were clear and got to the point, it’s not always good to be unconventional all of the time because you have to find a good balance and I believe we have with our titles and sounds. We found each title style on the website which we were happy with; we were influenced with films such as Columbiana, Sin city and snatch when we were choosing which fonts to use. This shows that we were not unconventional when choosing fonts as we took influence from other films, nothing we did here which hasn’t been seen before. We chose the style of font we did because it relates to our main protagonists behaviour as she is edgy and angry which meant we needed a font to match this, we feel the font expresses her personality well. We started looking for sounds on incompetech and after looking over many sounds we found a suitable track which suited our trailer and we combined this track with a youtube soundtrack in order to have a unique sound which nobody else has used. This is another unconventional trait and helps separate our trailer from the other group’s trailers. We did this because it was unique and we believe the narrative for our film is unique so it matched up well. It was important to us that we chose a sound that was relevant to our narrative which was also unconventional. The mise en scene for our trailer is conventional; this is because we didn’t have a budget that allowed us to buy the most unique costumes and to get the best sets. We had to use clothes we already owned and go to places in Brighton which were quiet and allowed us to be there. Although this helped us because we wanted our main character to be portrayed as a normal girl who then goes on to becoming a strong protagonist similarly to; Kill Bill. The audience we are targeting is similar age to ourselves so we chose outfits which are relevant and they can relate to. We still managed to choose a variety of relevant outfits and went to places which allowed us to achieve our goals.

Magazine and Poster  The purpose of both our magazine and poster was to provide further information of our film ‘The Hunter’ and to advertise our film on another format, through other media formats. This will help further promote our film because a wider range of audience and potential fans will be informed on our new film. This will provide a larger profit as more people will see our advertisement and want to the film.  We clearly perceived our main female protagonist as an edgy character who clearly has a vendetta (which can be explained by the font we have chosen like I’ve explained) to settle which immediately explains our film and ensures the reader wants to go and watch the film. This again attracts a wider target audience. All 3 of our different media advertisements help draw a larger audience in and we believe we were successful in doing so.  Both our poster and magazine are both very dark and mystical which offers a sense of ‘not knowing’ and a level of interest for the audience and will hopefully ensure they want to see the film. We have covered the main characters face in both with other colours, we did this to almost hide her which again the audience may be interested by.  By using these techniques in our two ancillary products you can visually tell that our narrative will be interesting and that our main character will take you on a journey through the narrative. We like to think that the audience will easily connect with our main character and will find her intriguing. The audience can recognise this by seeing both the poster and the magazine.
