© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. Unit Overview Electricity is an important part of the American lifestyle. While technology has made rapid progress in most areas, the way energy flows from where it is generated to where we use it is virtually unchanged. Today, more people use more energy, and more energy is wasted and used inefficiently than ever before. This unit will introduce you to a new way of using energy. You will learn about a system of new technologies for monitoring and distributing energy. By interacting and communicating with each other, these technologies will help us respond to our growing energy needs, while also helping the environment and producing many other benefits. For your unit project, you will work in teams to create a public service announcement (PSA) that will help educate people in your community about this energy revolution, what it means, and how they can participate! Overview

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. What You Will Do Analyze your home energy use Learn how the current electrical grid works Weigh the costs and benefits of a variety of renewable and nonrenewable energy resources Explore what makes an energy grid smart Craft messages about the benefits of a smart energy grid Create a PSA to help others learn about a benefit of the smart grid Overview

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. Household Energy Inventory Every time you flick a switch, turn a dial, or press a button, you are drawing from a source of energy. But have you ever thought just how much energy you use? Using the table that your teacher gives you, keep an inventory of all of the activities your family does that use energy. Then, make a list of the appliances or devices in your home that you keep continuously plugged in. Before You Begin

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. Saving Energy Have you ever heard anyone your family complain about an electric bill? Have you been told to turn off a light when you leave a room or close the refrigerator door before all the cold air escapes? If you could somehow reduce the amount of energy we all use, how might you help people in your community and help the planet at the same time? Lesson 1

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. Household Energy Analysis Which activities used the most energy in number of hours? During what times of day was the most energy used? During what times of year are your utility bills the highest? What sources of energy does your household use? Which energy source did you use for the most number of activities? Did any of you use different types of energy for the same activity? Lesson 1

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. Imagine! Imagine that all of your town’s energy comes from a coal-fired power plant on the outskirts of town. Make a rough sketch of how the electricity is distributed from the power plant to the houses on your street using power lines or buried cables. Lesson 1

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. National Grid XX Lesson 1

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. Sources of Energy Select an energy source and research your source: How is electricity generated using this source? Briefly describe the process. Where is this energy source found? Where can it be used? How widespread is its use today? Could the use of this form of energy be expanded in the future? Explain. What are some positive aspects or advantages of using this form of energy? What are some limitations or negative aspects of using this form of energy? Present your research to the class. Lesson 1

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. Advantages and Disadvantages Based on your research, what are the advantages of your energy source? What are its disadvantages? Lesson 1

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. Peak Energy When you go home this afternoon, what types of activities will you take part in that use electricity? During what hours will you do most of these things? Lesson 2

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. Discuss Handout 6 What are some of the problems associated with the current electrical grid? What are some compelling reasons for making the electrical grid more efficient? What are some ways smart grid technologies can improve our methods of using electricity? If you wanted to persuade someone of the benefits of smart grid technologies, which aspect would you focus on? Lesson 2

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. The Smart Grid In order to successfully use smart grid technologies, what audiences do you think need to learn more about them? Lesson 3

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. What is a PSA? What are the differences between regular advertisements and PSAs? Where have you seen PSAs? What kinds of topics have they addressed? Lesson 3

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. Analyze PSAs What is the main message of the PSA? Try to express it in a single sentence. What are some of the ideas—both positive and negative—the PSA uses to get the message across? What techniques does the PSA use to get the message across? (Dramatization, story, dialogue, descriptive images, powerful language, quotations, music, slogans or song lyrics, etc.) Was the PSA effective? If you found the PSA persuasive, jot down some reasons why. If you can think of ways it could have been more effective, jot those down as well. Lesson 3

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. What’s Your Message? How might you turn each of the benefits of the smart grid into one-sentence PSA messages? Think about the messages you came up with for the PSAs you just viewed. Lesson 3

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. Create Your PSA 1.Craft your message. 2.Brainstorm ideas. 3.Conduct research to find evidence for your ideas. 4.Decide on your format. 5.Make an outline. 6.Write the script. Lesson 3

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. Evaluate PSAs 1.Introduces a clear message at the beginning that is supported in the middle, and leaves the audience with a strong take away. 2.Uses at least three valid sources. 3.Supports the main message with facts, statistics, anecdotes, quotations, and other evidence obtained from the research. 4.Will likely capture and hold the audience’s attention for the entire 1- to 2- minute PSA. 5.Uses proper grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary. Lesson 3

© 2011 Silver Spring Networks. All rights reserved. Wrap It Up Why is it important to educate users of electricity, including homeowners, about smart grid technologies? What was the most interesting thing you learned about the benefits of a smart grid by completing your own team project? What was the most interesting thing you learned about the benefits of a smart grid by listening to other teams’ PSA scripts? What are some strategies you’ve learned about that might help the country transition to using smart grid technologies in the future? Lesson 3
