Presentation transcript:

Chapter 6, Section 1: A Technological Revolution Focus: Explain that the transformation of the United States in the late nineteenth century was due in large part to inventions that changed the way Americans lived and worked. Ask about the impact of electric light. Did You Know? Christopher Latham Sholes built the first successful typewriter in 1868. Sholes' friend, Charles Weller, soon devised the slogan, "Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their Party,” to test the efficiency of the new device.

A Technological Revolution Inventions – Between 1865 and 1900, a flood of new inventions increased America's productive capacity and improved its transportation and communications networks-all of which helped to promote industrial growth. Advancements Transportation Communications Electric Power

A. Communications Typewriter helped businesses communicate created in 1868 Telephone invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876 further improved communications telegraph was used by the military first later by the average citizen Electric power was introduced and improved refrigeration, cities, and factories. Electric light bulb was developed by Thomas Edison, it was cheap method of supplying light. The bulb lit up cities and made industrial production possible 24 hours a day.

B. Transportation transcontinental railroad completed in 1869 Brooklyn Bridge allowed more people to live in the suburbs but still work in Manhattan, making it the center of the business world Bessemer process patented – this led to the mass production of great amounts of steel (which is lighter, stronger and more flexible than iron)

C. Industrialization from a nation of farmers to a modern, industrial nation . During the second half of the 1800s, the United States changed. Power-driven sewing machines moved the clothing business from small tailor shops to large factories. Clothing became less expensive and more diverse. oil-lubricated tools A boom in the oil industry and the development of oil- lubricated tools spurred industrial growth. Resources The United States contained large amounts of coal, iron ore, lead, and copper. These and other minerals were used for the building of railroads, bridges, skyscrapers, and machinery. Human resources also helped American industry to grow. Between 1860 and 1890, America's population more than doubled, increasing from 31 million to nearly 75 million. Contributing to this growth was the approximately 14 million immigrants who arrived between 1860 and 1900. The nation's population boom provided burgeoning industries with a much- needed labor supply.
