History of Windows 1975–1981: Microsoft boots up The dawn of MS ‑ DOS. 1982–1985: Introducing Windows –1992: Windows 2.0– 2.11—More windows, more speed. 1990–1994: Windows 3.0– Windows NT—Getting the graphics. 1995–2001: Windows 95—the PC comes of age (and don't forget the Internet). 2

History of Windows 1998–2000: Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows Me. 2001–2005: Windows XP— Stable, usable, and fast. 2006–2008: Windows Vista— Smart on security. 2009–Today: Windows 7 and counting. 3

Basic Concepts Why the name “ Windows 7 “ ?? - Windows 7 is the seventh operating system by Microsoft. Why windows 7 ?? -Windows Vista didn’t exactly get a positive reception. -The base code of windows 7 is vista but it designed to delivers on the failures of Vista and fixes a lots of vista errors and also contains new features have been included to give a better operating system. 4

Find out which version of windows 6 Right click on the MY COMPUTER icon on the desktop. select PROPERTIES from the shortcut menu. The SYSTEM PROPERTIES dialog box will appear, and shows what version of Windows are currently used.

Introduction to Desktop

1.Glossary of Desktop Icons 8 MY DOCUMENTS is the default storage folder for created files. MY COMPUTER displays information about computer, such as the contents of computer drives. My Computer also allows user to find, view and organize files. RECYCLE BIN contains all unwanted files deleted from the user. INTERNET EXPLORER used for Internet connection, and search on the World Wide Web.

2.Windows Orb 9 Windows Orb known as the Start button in windows XP, is located on the left side of the taskbar and it opens the start menu. The start Menu:

Some of the items that seen in the START Menu Documents: The DOCUMENTS menu links you to your documents. Pictures: This will link you to your pictures folder Music: This links you to a folder for storing music Computer: Clicking this link will show you the drives connected to this computer Control Panel: Allows you to make changes to the current settings on the computer.

3.Task bar 11 The taskbar has three main sections: -Windows Orb or Start Button. -The middle section, which shows user which programs and files have opened by him. -The notification area, which includes a clock and icons (small pictures) that communicate the status of certain programs and computer settings.

Moving Task bar 12 The first method: -Click on any empty space on task bar -Select PROPRIETIES -From window select Task bar tab and determine Location of taskbar. The second method: -By drag task bar in the wanted place.

Customize the taskbar To unlock the taskbar – Right-click an empty space on the taskbar. If ‘Lock the taskbar’ has a check mark next to it, the taskbar is locked. – You can unlock it by clicking ‘Lock the taskbar’, which removes the check mark.

Windows in Windows 7 What is a Window? - A window is a boxed area in which you view programs, files, folders, drives, icons representing programs, and other elements. All the windows have the same structure. All the windows may contains: 14 - The tool bar.- The title bar. -The Navigation Pane.- The menu bar. - The scroll bars.

Title Bar Contains the name of the program you are working with and in some cases the name of the opened document also appears. In the top right corner we can find the minimize, maximize/restore, and close buttons. 15

cont. The minimize button, turns window into a button located in the Windows task bar. The maximize button, make the size of the window to the whole screen. The restore button, restores the window to its original state. The close button, closes the window. But, If we’ve modified the document, we are asked if we want to save the changes before closing. 16

Menu Bar The menu bar has the program functions organized in menus. All the operations that the program allows us to do are located within the different menus of this bar. 17

cont. To open a menu with the keyboard, you need to press the Alt key plus the underlined letter of the menu you want to open. If on a menu an option appears with a small arrow pointing to the right it means that that option contains other options. If on a menu you find an option that contains three dots, it means that the option needs more information to be executed. 18

cont. If you find an option that is grey or lighter colored it means that it is not possible to select it at that moment. 19

Scroll Bars The scroll bars allow us to move through out the page in a quick and simple manner. Simply drag the bar with the mouse or click on the arrows. There are bars to move along the width of the page and bars to move along the height of the page. The little square with dots on the right is used to change the size of the window. Simply click and drag. 20

Navigation Pane The Navigation Pane is used to give the user certain information. This information varies depending on the window that is opened at the time. This bar is not shown by default in Windows XP, You can activate or deactivate it from the menu organize --> layout --> Navigation Pane. 23

Moving a window To move a window, point to its title bar with the mouse pointer. Then drag the window to the location that you want.

Changing the size of a window

Hiding a window Hiding a window is called minimizing it. To minimize a window, click its Minimize button. The window disappears from the desktop and is visible only as a button on the taskbar, the long horizontal bar at the bottom of your screen. To make a minimized window appear again on the desktop, click its taskbar button. The window appears exactly as it did before you minimized it.

Closing a window Closing a window removes it from the desktop and taskbar. If you're done with a program or document and don't need to return to it right away, close it. To close a window, click its Close button Note –If you close a document without saving any changes you made, a message appears that gives you the option to save your changes.

Shortcuts Shortcut used to enable faster access of programs, folders, documents, printers etc. Creating Shortcuts Using START menu: 1.Click on the START button. 2.Move by mouse over wanted program 3.Select send to and Desktop(create shortcut). 30

Shortcuts Creating Shortcuts from the Desktop : 1.Click on an empty part of the desktop. 2. select NEW --> shortcut. 3.From the dialog box that appeared select wanted program by pressed the BROWSE button to identify his location then click OK. 4. Click on NEXT 5. Type in the name of shortcut and click on OK 6.Your shortcut will now appear on the desktop. 31

Arranging Icons on the Desktop To arrange icons by name, by size, by type and when last modified. 1.right mouse click on a free spot anywhere on the desktop. 2. When the shortcut menu appears, select Sort by, then select your preference.

Selecting Files and Folders In WINDOWS EXPLORER, you can select multiple files and folders by combining the use of the keyboard with the mouse. Single Selection – point by mouse over the wanted item and click once. The item will be highlighted. Scattered Selection – hold down the CTRL key and then click on each item you want to select

cont. Block Selection – click on the first wanted item and hold down the SHIFT key, then click the last item to be included in the selection Selecting All – To select everything in a folder, use keyboard shortcut - CTRL+A.

To change how items appear in a folder Open the folder that you want to change. Click the arrow next to the Views button on the toolbar. Click a view or move the slider to change the appearance of your files and folders. 39

Accessing Folders and Drives Double click on “My Computer” Select the relevant drive where your folders reside. Or single click the “Windows Explorer” icon on the task bar to navigate to your folder.

Creating New Folders There are three ways for creating a new folder: 1. First Method: Locate and select the folder on the drive where you want to create a new folder; Right click the mouse in the RIGHT PANE; Select NEW from the shortcut menu, then click on FOLDER; after that Type the folder name.

cont. 2. The second Method :Select New folder from tool bar 3. The third Method :Click on FILE menu, select NEW, then select FOLDER; NOTE: If you cannot see the menu bar, click Organize, layout, and select Menu bar.

Renaming Files and Folders Method 1 - Using the FILE Menu 1.Select the file or folder you wish to rename; 2.Click on the FILE menu and select RENAME; 3.Type in the new name press ENTER OR CLICK AWAY FROM THE RECTANGLE THAT SURROUNDS THE FILE OR FOLDER NAME. Method 2 – Using the Right Mouse Button 1.Select the file or folder you wish to rename; 2. Click the right mouse button while still pointing to the file; 1. Select RENAME from the shortcut menu; Method 3 – Using the Left Mouse Button 1.Select the file or folder you wish to rename; 2.Wait a moment then click again (not in quick succession like a double click). A surrounding rectangle will appear around the name; 3. Type in the new name Method 4– Using f2 from keyboard.

Deleting Files and Folders Right-click the file or folder that you want to delete, and then click Delete. Or Press Del _key from keyboard to avoid sending a file or folder to the Recycle Bin), hold down the SHIFT key, press delete on the Keyboard.

Moving Files and Folders Method 1 : Using CUT and PASTE Cut: -Click on the EDIT menu, select the CUT function; -Keyboard shortcut, CTRL + X; -Click on the selected item with the RIGHT mouse button and select “CUT” from the shortcut menu. Paste -Click on the EDIT menu, select the PASTE function; - Keyboard shortcut, CTRL + V; -In the position where you want the item to be pasted, click with the RIGHT mouse button and select “PASTE” from the shortcut menu.

Determine the attributes of a file or folder 1.Select the file or folder. 2.Right click on the file or folder. 3.Select PROPERTIES from the shortcut menu. 4.dialog box will open.

cont. 1.Type of File: tells what program that file was created in 2.Opens with: tells what application (software) the file will open in. 3.Location: the path name for the file 4.Size: the size of the file 5.Size on disk: how much room the file is taking in storage. 6.Created: the date and time the file was originally created. 7.Modified: the date and time the file was last modified 8.Accessed: the date and time the file was last accessed 9.Hidden: to hidden file but not delete or change it. 10.Read Only: A file contains information that can read but not changed,

The Recycle Bin The Recycle Bin is a space on the hard disk used to store files or folders that is deleted. To open the Recycle Bin double- Click on the Recycle Bin icon. To recover files from the Recycle Bin: 1.Open the recycle bin 2.Click on file, and then, on the toolbar, click Restore this item. To restore all of the files, click Restore all items. 50

Delete any file or folder from the Recycle Bin 1. Select the Elements to be deleted. 2. Click on Delete button from keyboard. 3. Or R-click on the selected elements then select delete From the dialog box 4. The selected files will disappear and cannot be restored.

Emptying the Recycle Bin 1.Click on the FILE menu; 2.Select EMPTY RECYCLE BIN; 3.Click on YES to confirm. 4.Or Right Click on RECYCLE BIN and select EMPTY RECYCLE BIN. 5.Or Click on EMPTY RECYCLE BIN on the tool bar. 52

cont. A window will appear asking Confirm you want to delete these X elements? where X is the number of elements currently in the Recycle Bin. Click Yes to empty it.

Control Panel The Control Panel in Windows 7 is the central location for all your operating system configuration needs. There, exist 45 individual tools that will allow you to configure and control just about every aspect of Windows 7.

Add or remove programs Opening Control Panel and then select : 1.Programs, then select programs and features.

Screen resolution Opening Control Panel: 1.Right click on disk top select screen resolution. 2.Or click on start button and from start menu select CONTROL PANEL from control panel select display adjust resolution.

Aero Themes and Aero Background Windows Aero is a “theme” for Windows. 1.Open control panel and select PERSONALIZATION. 2.Or Right Click on empty space on Disk Top and select PERSONALIZATION.

How to Install Windows 7 1. Step1 - Place Windows 7 DVD into DVD-ROME drive and start the PC. 2. Step2 - setup your language, time and currency format, keyboard or input method. Choose your required settings and click next to continue.

Cont. 3. Step3 - The next screen allows you to install or repair Windows 7. by clicking on "install now". 4. Step4 - I accept license terms. Then click next to continue. 5. Step5 - select Custom (Advanced).

Cont. 6. Step 6 - Choose where you would like to install Windows Step 7 - Windows 7 starts the installation process and starts copying all the necessary files to your hard drive as shown on the image below.

Cont. 8. Step8 - It will go through various stages of the setup and will reboot your system few times. 9. Step9 - When your PC reboots it attempts to boot from DVD as its the first boot device. Do not press any key during the boot prompt so Windows 7 will continue with the installation by booting from the hard drive.

Cont. 10. Step10 - After the reboot your computer will be prepared for first use. 11. Step11 - At this stage you need to choose a user name and computer name. Click next to continue. 12. Step12 - Choose your password

Cont. 13. Step13 - You can now type the product key that came with Windows 7 and click next. 14. Step14 - Help protect your computer and improve Windows automatically. Choose Use recommended settings.

Cont. 15. Step15 - Review your time and date settings. Select your time zone, correct the date and time and click next to continue. 16. Step16 - Windows will now finalize the settings for your computer and restart. 17. Step17 - After the final restart Windows 7 will start to boot up.
