The Brain

Do Now  Read article about Junior Seau and his brain disease  Discuss

Homework Due Today  Create 12 flashcards using these 6 areas of the brain:  Cerebrum  Cerebellum  Brain stem  Limbic System  Thalamus  Hypothalamus  One one card, write the part of the brain. On a SEPARATE card, write the action of that region of the brain

Game Time!  Partner up and play memory!  Shuffle cards and spread them out on the table  Have fun!

Review  The area of the brain that is the site of intelligence and learning  Cerebrum  Coordination of muscles and movement  Cerebellum  The body’s functions continue when you are asleep or unconscious  Brain stem  Emotions, behavior and memory  Limbic System  Receives messages from sensory receptors throughout the body and then relays the information to the proper regions of the cerebrum  Thalamus  Control center for recognition and analysis of hunger, thirst, fatigue, anger and body temp.  Hypothalamus

Spinal Cord  The main function of the spinal cord is to be the main link between the brain and the rest of the body  Spinal column is created by vertebrae, vertebral disks and spinal cord

Alzheimer’s Disease  Disease that attacks the brain  Most common form of dementia  Dementia – the general term for a decrease in mental ability  There is medication that can help ease the symptoms of Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s  Interactive Alzheimer's Tour Interactive Alzheimer's Tour

Concussions  A minor traumatic brain injury (TBI); occurs when a head hits an object or a moving object strikes the head  In most cases, the victim never loses consciousness  The effect on the brain The effect on the brain

Concussions  Review concussion handout

Symptoms  Confusion  Fatigue  Headache  Loss of consciousness  Nausea/vomiting  Memory loss

Symptoms  More Severe…  Seizures  Muscle weakness  Coma  Unequal pupils  Unusual eye movement
