WMO SDS-WAS programme. Regional Center for Northern Africa, Middle East and Europe. Activity Report Enric Terradellas, José M. Baldasano, Emilio Cuevas and Francesco Benincasa Meeting of the Regional Steering Group. Antalya, Turkey, Nov. 2011

The Regional Center The Regional Center is jointly managed by AEMET and the BSC-CNS. It is located in Barcelona, at BSC- CNS premises

Objetives of the Regional Center  Lead the implementation and operation of an integrated system of observation and prediction  Identify and improve observational and forecast products  Promote the creation and improvement of observational networks in developing countries.  Facilitate user access to information  Create and maintain a website  Create alternative systems tailored to users  Build capacity of countries to use the products supplied

Monitor atmospheric dust Validate products from other observing systems Validate and verify model predictions Data assimilation into numerical models Ground-based In-situ (AQ monitoring stations) Indirect Observations: visibility Sun photometers (AERONET) Lidar, ceilometers Satellite-based GEO LEO, MEO Specific objectives Observing systems Integrated observational system

In-situ observations (AQ stations)  Rural background stations  Near-real-time data

Lidar - Ceilometer An elastic lidar and a ceilometer work following the same principle, but  The aim of LIDAR is to measure backscattering by molecules and aerosol.  The aim of ceilometers is to measure backscattering by clouds EARLINET Potenza, 26 June 2006 Ceilometer CHM15kx (manufactured by JenOptik)
