Africa Research Capacity Building Initiative Funded by Sida ( ) Five main activities for combining capacity building and network formation: A.Travel Support B.Journals and knowledge diffusion C.Regional Academies in Africa D.Africa Conference E.Policy Reports and Website 3

A. Travel Support Aims to increase participation from low income (particularly African) countries in our community. – Conferences, academies and seminars Starting from a low base – 2011 Conference = 4 from (3 from Africa) LI and 32 (4 from Africa) from from LMI – 50% rejection rate at peer review gate Mentorship initiative – 20 Authors from Africa in pilot run 4

Aims to enhance access to journals – Publishing (‘review services’, language services, special issues) – Consumption (open access, preferential subscription) Collaboration with five key journals Bibliometric work B. Regional Academies Building on models from International Academy and Cicalics Locations – Kenya (2012?) – Algeria (2013) Setting up further academy events on specific sectors or technologies such as ICT, energy or agribusiness. Possibility to open academies for master's degree students or run separate courses Academies for policy makers 6

D. Africa Conference 2014 Africa conference should be a synthesis event which brings together aforementioned activities (a showcase event!) Prior conferences in South Africa (2005) and Senegal (2009) Absorptive capacity crucial for having a lasting effect. The location of the 2014 conference will be decided on the basis of proposals from interested parties. 7
