1.03B Reduce, Reuse, Recycle B UNDERSTAND REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE The best place to practice conserving resources is at home. Individuals can substantially REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE waste and conserve resources by practicing the following :

1.03B Reduce, Reuse, Recycle2 REDUCE: To cut the amount of WASTE used: SOLID WASTE (consuming and conserving): Packaging: Choose products with minimal packaging Paper Products: Reduce the amount of paper products used Other: Identify products and practices to reduce waste toxicity. (Batteries, pesticides, cleaners, polishes, deodorizers, etc.) REDUCE the amount of paper products used.

1.03B Reduce, Reuse, Recycle3 REDUCE: To cut the amount of ENERGY used: Lighting Use fluorescent, energy saving bulbs Use sunlight Surface Units Size of pan=size of burner Use lids

1.03B Reduce, Reuse, Recycle4 Refrigerators / Freezers Replace gaskets for a tight seal Close doors Ovens o Keep door closed during cooking

1.03B Reduce, Reuse, Recycle5 REDUCE: To cut the amount of WATER used: Faucets Repair leaks Dishwashing Wash by hand Wash then rinse…cut water off when washing Run full loads Air dry

1.03B Reduce, Reuse, Recycle6 Cooking Methods o Rinse fruits and vegetables quickly.

1.03B Reduce, Reuse, Recycle7 REUSE: Products that you can use again Solutions Consider reusable products Maintain and repair durable products Reuse bags, containers, and other items

1.03B Reduce, Reuse, Recycle8 REUSE Borrow, rent, or share items used infrequently Sell or donate goods instead of throwing them out. Be creative with leftovers and create new dishes.

1.03B Reduce, Reuse, Recycle9 RECYCLE: Products that can be reprocessed to making something new Solutions: Choose recyclable products Select products made from recycled materials Compost yard clippings and some food scraps. Find creative ways to recycle “disposable” packages and products.

1.03B Reduce, Reuse, Recycle10 Assignment Choose 1 partner and create a poster that will serve as a public service announcement for someone that has no idea how to reduce, reuse, and recycle in the kitchen. Your poster should encourage the person to use conservation techniques! Include: information from the previous notes, pictures, reasons why conservation is important, and PICTURES OR GRAPHICS!
