REFLECTIVE QUESTIONING IN A PLANNING CONVERSATION HOW TO BECOME A BETTER LISTENER AROUND JUST ABOUT ANYTHING

WELCOME QUICK WHIP AROUND WITH YOUR NAME WHY YOU CAME TO THIS SESSION

SESSION OBJECTIVES AS A RESULT OF THIS SESSION, YOU’LL BE READY TO… DISCUSS THE IMPORTANCE OF REFLECTIVE QUESTIONING IN CREATING GROWTH IN TEACHERS, DISTINGUISH BETWEEN COGNITIVE COACHING AND CONSULTING. USE THREE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PARAPHRASE TO CREATE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF THINKING. USE A MAP TO PLAN A HOLD A PLANNING CONFERENCE WHETHER YOU’RE A PRINCIPAL, INSTRUCTIONAL COACH, OR A FELLOW TEACHER, GOOD REFLECTIVE CONVERSATIONS HAVE THE POWER TO SIGNIFICANTLY SHIFT PRACTICES, SOLVE PROBLEMS, AND REVEAL LEVERAGE POINTS

COGNITIVE COACHING THE ART OF REFLECTIVE QUESTIONING SO THAT PEOPLE COME UP WITH THEIR OWN SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS. THEY OWN THE ANSWER THE ANSWER IS BEST SUITED TO THE PERSON YOU ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OUTCOME PERSON MUST HAVE THE CAPACITY TO DETERMINE THE ANSWER

REFLECTING QUESTIONING WITH CONSULTING USES THE SAME SKILLS AS COGNITIVE COACHING BUT THE COACH MAKES A CONSCIOUS DECISION TO INFLUENCE THE ANSWER TO EITHER A SMALL OR LARGE DEGREE WHAT ARE SOME OF THE “PROS” TO THIS APPROACH? WHAT ARE SOME OF THE POTENTIAL PITFALLS?

SKILLS NEEDED FOR REFLECTIVE QUESTIONING – SPACE REVIEW SPACE SILENCE PARAPHRASE ACCEPTING LANGUAGE CLARIFYING QUESTIONS EVIDENCE SEEKING TODAY WE WILL FOCUS ON PARAPHRASE

SKILLS NEEDED FOR REFLECTIVE QUESTIONING  MUTUAL RESPECT  CURIOSITY VS. PROBLEM SOLVING  RAPPORT AND EMPATHY  NONJUDGMENTAL  PROFESSIONAL UNCERTAINTY

Two arenas for paraphrasing: Emotional Content Paraphrase sends three messages: I am listening I am interested/I care I understand Three levels of paraphrase : Simple (acknowledges and clarifies) Summarizes (organizes) Shift (shifts thinking)

PRACTICING REFLECTIVE QUESTIONING TRIADS 8 MINUTES EACH ONE IS PLANNING ONE HELPS CREATE A PLAN THROUGH REFLECTIVE QUESTIONING AND PARAPHRASE ONE TRACKS SKILLS AND TOOLS FOCUSING ON PARAPHRASE

WHAT DID YOU THINK? WHAT FELT NATURAL? WHAT WAS DIFFICULT? ROTATE ROLES….

REFLECTION WHAT SKILLS DO YOU WANT TO PRACTICE AND MAKE PART OF YOUR REPERTOIRE? HOW WILL YOU GO ABOUT PRACTICING THESE? HOW WILL YOU BUILD IN AN ACCOUNTABILITY MEASURE FOR YOURSELF?
