BARRIER ISLAND FIELD TRIP Student & Parent Informational Meeting Monday, September 29 th Colleton County Middle School – Mini-Auditorium 6PM The mission of Colleton County Middle School is to “Provide meaningful learning experiences for all students."

What is Barrier Island?  Barrier Island Environmental Education Program  Held at St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center on Seabrook Island –  25 miles south of Charleston, S.C.  300 acres of maritime forest, salt marsh, and mile of beachfront  Sleep in cabins 8-9 students, 1-2 adults

Goals of the Program  To introduce students, teachers, and chaperones to various ecological concepts such as habitats, adaptations, behaviors, communities and conservation  To help children overcome fears associated with the outdoors by teaching them how to better understand nature and to recognize that we are part of it  To spark students’ interest in science through the use of hands-on, experiential learning

Curriculum  Designed to be an extension of the classroom curriculum following S.C. state standards  Integrate subjects such as science, social studies, physical education, and character education  All classes are activity-oriented: Scientific experiments on the beach Collecting samples from the pond Playing a game illustrating food webs Many more…

A Typical Schedule at Barrier Island  Monday  11:30-12:00 Arrive and go to cabins  12:15-1:30 Lunch  2:00-3:00 Orientation, Tour  3:00-5:00 Class  6:00-7:00 Dinner  7:30-9:30 Evening activities & snack  10:00 Lights Out! Tuesday 8:30-9:15 Breakfast 9:30-11:30 Class 12:30-1:30 Lunch 2:00-4:00 Class 4:30-5:15 Beach Recreation 6:00-7:00 Dinner 7:30-9:30 Evening activities & snack 10:00 Lights Out! Wednesday 8:00-8:45 Breakfast 8:45-9:15 Clean cabins 9:30-11:30 Class 12:00-12:45 Picnic Lunch 1:00 Goodbye!

Trip Dates  Monday, January 26 th, 2015 CCMS Departure Time: 9:30 AM Arrival to Barrier Island: 11:30AM  Tuesday, January 27 th, 2015 Barrier Island  Wednesday, January 28 th, 2015 Barrier Island Departure Time: 12pm Arrival to CCMS: 2PM

Cost  $190 to be paid in 3 installments 1 st Payment: $60 – Monday, October 13 th (Letter of Intent Due & Deposit is NON-REFUNDABLE!) 2 nd Payment: $65 – Monday, November 17 th 3 rd Payment: $65 – Monday, December 15 th  Checks can be made payable to: Colleton County Middle School For – Barrier Island Field Trip (Parents are welcomed to pay the entire amount at any time)

Trip Logistics  Trip cost includes transportation, lodging, meals and program for 3 days and 2 nights.  70 Slots Available  First come, first served basis  Both the letter of intent and the deposit are due at the same time!

Chaperones  Parent chaperones are needed for the trip  If you’re interested, please sign-up on the form in the back and you will receive more information in the next few days  $25 – SLED Background Check required  For more information contact Mr. Garvin at by Friday, October 3 rd.
