Assessment Reporting: Institutional Requirements for Educational Programs Office of Institutional Assessment April 7, 2014

Content 1.Assessment Plan and Report  Required Components for Educational Programs 2.Important Changes to the Assessment Report 3.New Directions and Reporting Timeline 2

Required Components: Overview Purpose Statement for the program/degree Assessment Plan 1.Outcomes 2.Means of Assessment 3.Criterion for Success Assessment Report (NOTE CHANGES IN THIS AREA) 4.Actions Taken, Results, and Analysis of Results 5.Actions Planned for the Next Reporting Year 3

Assessment Plan: Outcomes Institutional Requirements 1.Must have 3 student learning outcomes  Must clearly state what students are expected to demonstrate (knowledge, skills, attitudes) 2.Must have 2 institutional learning outcomes (Global and Leadership)  Certificates, stand-along minors and foundations units do NOT need to assess 2 institutional learning outcomes. 4

Assessment Plan: Means of Assessment Institutional Requirements 1.Must clearly measure the stated outcome 2.Must have a direct means of assessment 3.Must have multiple means of assessment for 1 outcome  2 nd means of assessment can be an indirect measure 5

Assessment Plan: Criterion for Success Institutional Requirements 1.Must describe how well students are expected to perform 2.Must be set at a level appropriate to the unit and not set too low just to be attainable 3.Must be stated in a quantifiable manner 6

Assessment Report: Important Changes 7 Rationale: To clearly demonstrate that all programs take curricular or pedagogical actions to improve student learning based on analysis of assessment results, institutional requirements for the Assessment Report have changed. Old Column HeadingNew Column Heading ResultsActions Taken, Results and Analysis of Results Actions Taken and Follow-Up to Actions Taken Actions Planned for Next Reporting Year

Assessment Report: Actions Taken, Results, and Analysis of Results Institutional Requirements 1.Actions Taken in the Reporting Year  Must describe the curricular or pedagogical actions taken to improve student learning in the current reporting year (past tense) 2.Results from Means of Assessment  Must summarize results from the means of assessment in the current reporting year 3.Analysis of Results  Must identify an area or areas of student learning that can be improved in order to meet the stated outcome  Must be based on review of assessment results, student products and/or professional judgment 8

Assessment Report: Actions Planned for the Next Reporting Year Institutional Requirements 4.Actions Planned for the Next Reporting Year  Must describe the curricular or pedagogical actions planned to improve the identified area or areas of student learning in the next reporting year (future/present tense) 9

Hypothetical Example: In Compliance Actions Taken, Results, & Analysis of Results 1.CON simulation days were conducted in fall Students were prepared for these simulation activities by specific in-class assignments focused on acquiring and developing communication skills. Students worked in small groups prior to the simulation days in order to practice these skills in a more informal setting. Immediate feed back was given verbally to each group by instructors and peers % of students (N=32) scored 3.5 or above on the rubric. 3.While the criterion was met for the overall rubric, the average score for professional communication skills in the “maintaining sterile field during catheritization” activity was only a 2.7. Faculty have decided that verbal and non-verbal communication skills in this specific activity need to be targeted for improvement next year. Actions Planned for Next Reporting Year 4.Practice sessions focused on verbal and non-verbal professional communication skills in “maintaining sterile field during catheritization” activities will be integrated into specific in-class assignments. Additional opportunities to demonstrate improvement in this area will be offered in the CON simulation days planned for fall

Hypothetical Example: Out of Compliance Actions Taken, Results, & Analysis of Results  100% of students (N=32) scored 3.5 or above on the rubric.  While the criterion was met for the overall rubric, the average score for professional communication skills in the “maintaining sterile field during catheritization” activity was only a 2.7. Faculty have decided that verbal and non-verbal communication skills in this specific activity need to be targeted for improvement next year. Actions Planned  Practice sessions focused on verbal and non-verbal professional communication skills in “maintaining sterile field during catheritization” activities will be integrated into specific in-class assignments. Additional opportunities to demonstrate improvement in this area will be offered in the CON simulation days planned for fall

Hypothetical Example: Out of Compliance Actions Taken, Results, & Analysis of Results  100% of students (N=32) scored 3.5 or above on the rubric. The criterion was met. Actions Planned  Faculty met and decided to continue this assessment for the next year. 12

Summary of New Reporting Requirements In the Actions Taken, Results, and Analysis of Results text box: 1.Enter actual actions taken in the current reporting year (AY ). These actions must have been changes in pedagogy or curriculum) 2.Enter current results for each means of assessment 3.Enter a summary of the analysis of assessment data that identifies an area or areas for improvement in student learning In the Actions Planned for the Next Reporting Year text box: 4.Enter Actions Planned for the next reporting year (AY ) that are designed to improve student learning based on the analysis of assessment data (must reflect changes in pedagogy or curriculum) 13
