Lüneburg

History of Lüneburg Lüneburg is a very old town. It exists since the 8th century. Because Lüneburg was the only contractor of salt in northern Germany it soon took part in the Hanse which was a very Germany. That made the city very rich and famous. The salt was used for conserving fish which was very important in the middle ages, because at that time did not exists any fridge. In 1980 the last mine was shut down, because of the centuries continuing digging of salt the earth between the mines and the fundaments of the houses became very thin so a part of the city sank down.
