State and Local Guidelines Important information needs to be given to parent in native language -Most parents need it verbally ESOL interpreters provided for conferences
Non Discrimination Guidelines The legal status of student or family is confidential and cannot be shared We cannot require a social security card for registration There will be potential personal litigation if there is failure to comply with state and local guidelines
Rights of an ESOL Student Protected under federal, state and local guidelines & Office of Civil Rights ELLs are entitled to modified assignments, grades, tests Modifications provided on state mandated testing are as needed and given throughout the school year Form is required for a failing ELL with modifications listed Students cannot be failed if it is due to language acquisition issues
Language Acquisition Process Sequence of language acquisition: listening, speaking, reading and writing * Silent period may last up to several months * Social language learned in about 2 years and academic one in 5 -7 * State mandated service guidelines = Level 1 and 2 need at least 1 hour a day Level 3 less than an hour
Word Calling vs. Comprehension *Benchmarking in reading is not the best measure of success...Kids could be reading phonetically without comprehension *Teach Vocabulary through VISUALS and REPETITION, REPETITION, REPETITION
Monitor Students These are former ESOL students They exited with a composite score of 4 or 5 on the ELDA They need two years of monitoring Monitor students could be pulled back into ESOL if struggling Report card required every quarter
Cultural Values Education is a priority Students and parents are quiet, bashful and non-assertive Parent’s would rather be addressed as senor + last name or senora +last name “teacher” is a honorable title
Literacy of Mayan Parents Most parents speak Spanish and/or a Mayan dialect No literacy or minimal literacy Some cannot read or write in Spanish Do not expect parents to help with phonics or reading Basic Math easier Majority cannot provide homework help

Facts about Mayan Culture: The Mayans were excellent builders and many of their temples and buildings are aligned to help observers monitor position.
