VMWare Workstation Installation
Starting Vmware Workstation Go to the start menu and start the VMware Workstation program. *Note: The following instructions are written starting at the point after the download and/or installation of VMware Workstation (or MS Virtual PC). If you have any questions regarding the download or installation see your instructor.
Creating a new virtual machine. Select “New Virtual Machine” on the Home page.
Selecting the Configuration Method For this installation, we will stay with the default of “Typical” configuration. The “Custom” configuration should be done by more advanced users or with the guidance of your instructor. Click Next.
Selecting the boot image Select “Installer disc image file (iso)” Click Browse
Selecting the boot image Find the iso image for the installation and Click Next
Software Key Enter the key that came with your software. Click Next
Naming the Virtual Machine In this step you need to give your virtual machine a descriptive name and select a location for it. It’s good practice to include the OS version in the name and create a folder with the same name just for that particular virtual machine. Click Next.
How big should the VM be? Although the size of your VM can be proportional to the size of the hard drive that it is on, we will make ours 16 GB. Click Next.
Creating the VM Check the settings to make sure they are correct and then click Finish.
Select the OS Version For this installation we are going with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise without Hyper-V (Full Installation)
Installing Windows… It will take several minutes to complete the installation.
VM Complete Your VM has been created. Now you need to log into the server.
Login Enter a password for the Administrator account and login as Administrator.
VMware Tools VMware Tools installation should start automatically after you login.
Updates After logging in and setting up a network connection the first thing to do would be check for updates.
Updates Install the Windows Update Software.
Updates If you don’t select all updates, it’s a good idea to at least select “Important” updates.
Installation Complete Your new Microsoft Windows Server 2008 VM should be ready to go now.
