The Powder Magazine (c.1713) Located on Cumberland Street. South Carolina’s oldest public building. Used to store gunpowder until the American Revolution.

St. Philip’s Church Located on Church Street. Congregation was established in The church that stands today was completed in 1838.

French Huguenot Church Located on Church Street. The congregation was founded in 1681 by Huguenot refugees from France. The present building dates to 1845.

The Old Exchange Building Located on East Bay Street. Completed in 1771 as a customs house. Patriot’s were held captive at this location during the American Revolution. South Carolina ratified the U.S. Constitution here in 1788.

The Heyward-Washington House (C.1772) A brick double house, owned by Thomas Heyward, Jr. Heyward signed the Declaration of Independence. President Washington stayed at this house in 1791.

St. Michael’s Church Located at Meeting & Broad Street. Congregation was established in The church that stands today was completed in 1761.

Charleston County Courthouse Located at Meeting & Broad Street. First built in 1753 as the South Carolina capitol, reconstructed in 1792 and used for the Charleston district courts. Its architect, James Hoban, also designed the White House in Washington, DC.

The Fireproof Building (C.1822) Located at Meeting & Chalmers Street. The first fireproof building in the Nation built to protect documents. Designed by Robert Mills, who is considered to be America’s first professional architect. Today the structure is home to The SC Historical Society.
