How Will I Know If I Have Learned Something Today? Okay I will be able to wonder about a text and write a question in relation to it. Good I will be able to guess some deeper meaning from a text and write a sentence explaining my guess. Great I will be able to guess some deeper meaning from reading the last slide and explain that using a quote as evidence.

What is an Inference? It is based on all of the information that you have available at that time. It is not necessarily a correct guess, but it is an educated one. An inference is an assumption that you make about something that you see, read, or experience.

How can I make inference? When reading something new, you think about a clue that the author has put in their writing. You add your own experience of a situation like that or your own learning about the topic You predict some further information by putting the two ideas together.

Everyday Inferences Here are some inferences that you probably make on a daily basis. If a teacher writes information on the board during a lesson You infer that it is important information that you may need later. If a child runs in the house holding their knee and crying You infer that they have somehow hurt their knee. You may not always be correct in your inferences, but they are assumptions that you make based on the given clues.

Task: Inferences from Pictures {Click mouse to continue} Sunburnt, small bare feet. The person was wearing flip flops. A bandaged toe. Standing out side on wood decking. Where are they? Why is their toe bandaged? I think this is a child who got blister on their toe so had to wear flip flops. Maybe it was the hottest day of the year.

Observe- Wonder -Infer Spend some time viewing the photo, then complete an O-W-I chart to show what you observe, wonder and infer from the photo. 15 minutes

Let’s transfer these skills we have developed from analysing pictures to analysing hidden meanings in text. 1. When I woke up, there were branches and leaves all over the garden. It is probably morning time. The person has woken up and seen something in their garden that was not there before. ‘All over’ suggests the garden is covered!

1. When I woke up, there were branches and leaves all over the garden. I think there has been a storm over night which has caused leaves and branches to blown into someone’s garden. I can infer it is morning time and perhaps the person is a little shocked to see their garden covered.

1.We bought tickets and some popcorn. 2.I forgot to set my alarm clock last night. 3.Sam grabbed his coat and umbrella. 4.The judge condemned the suspect and issued a £3000 fine. 5.I nimbly dodged the puddles on the pavement. Task: Make an inference about the sentence highlighting and picking out a key word or phrase. Think about what the text suggests about the person or situation. Use O-W-I if it helps! 10 minutes. For example: 5. I can infer from the adverb ‘nimbly’ that the person is quick and light on their feet.
