INTRODUCTION: WHAT HAS COLORFUL SCALY WINGs AND IS AN INSECT ? A BUTTERFLY ! 1

WHAT IS A BUTTERFLY? A Butterflies' wing span can reach up to 5 inches(13 centimeters)long. Scientists estimate that there are 28,00 of these fluttering creatures all around! A monarch butterfly's magnificent colors tell “do not eat me… I am poisonous.” 2

How Butterfly's got their name -----these beautiful flying creatures were flying around while people were churning butter. 3

A Butterfly habitat Most of these beautiful flying creatures live all around the world. They are mostly found in rain forests. Here are some of the places they live--- North and South America, Australia, some Pacific islands, India, and western Europe. 4

Butterflies fly from city to city. This is called migration. They do this to avoid cold weather. Although Butterflies live in all these places, they still are found in meadows and fields. 5

what Do They Eat? The first thing a caterpillar eats is its own egg shell. Then it starts to eat leaves viciously. Some caterpillars are carnivores. 6

A rare few of these fluttering creatures eat rotting animal flesh and animal fluids. Some prefer fruit. Butterflies eat their food through a long tube called a probices and taste with their feet. 7

life cycle An adult female butterfly lays 500 eggs on a plant. A few months later a tiny worm like creature comes out of the egg shell. The worm like creature sheds its old skin over and over again. Then it makes a shell as hard as a rock called a chrysalis. Then a delicate Butterfly comes out and it has wings as fragile as wet paper. 8

Dangers Dragon Flies, birds, spiders, and humans are all predators to butterflies. Me and you are predators to butterflies. Black Backed Orioles and Black Headed Grosbeaks are just some of many birds that eat Butterflies. Many different Spiders consume Butterflies for food. Humans are a threat to Butterfly's habitats. 9

Fast facts The swallowtail butterfly has tails at the end of its wings. Female monarch butterflies have thicker veins than males. Butterflies can lay up to 500 eggs. Some monarch butterflies are called the milkweed butterfly. There are 28,00 species of butterflies in the entire world. 10
