Trojan War notes Epic poem: long narrative that relates the deeds of heroes. By Coach Guzman

Part 1-Apple of Discord Struggle began: Eris, goddess of discord and quarreling, was not invited to the wedding of hero Peleus. - So Eris threw golden apple labeled “ for the fairest” apple rolled up to where 3 goddesses were sitting: Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. All three of these goddesses claimed the apple for themselves.

Zeus refused to judge this Olympian beauty contest. So the three goddesses go to Paris because he was supposed to be a good judge of feminine beauty. Each goddess promised Paris something if he would favor her over the others. He was young and shallow-minded. So he awarded the golden apple to Aphrodite. She offered Paris the most beautiful woman in the world to be his wife. Problem the most beautiful woman in the world at this time is Helen of Sparta. Problem she is already married to Menelaus.

Special Oath: All Greek men take oath that they would accept this decision and support Helen’s husband. The oath: If any one man interfered with Helen and her husband then that man would be punished. Paris, with the help of Aphrodite, made Helen fall madly in love with him. One day when Menelaus got back from somewhere, he found both Paris and Helen gone and headed to Troy. Remember the oath! It went into effect.

Part Two Valiant Warriors- The Greeks gathered together hundreds of ships and set sail for Troy. Both Greek and Trojan armies were strong The gods, as they always do, took sides: Hera, Athena and Poseidon were on the Greek side. Aphrodite, Artemis and Ares were on the Trojan side.

The war went on for 9-10 years! The Greeks could not take the city of Troy Trojans could not drive out the Greeks. Part Three Tells about the mini battle between men not significant to us really You can rent the movie Troy

PART FOUR Wooden Horse and Fall of Troy During the 10 th year at war, it finally ends The Greeks take the city of Troy by surprise. Greek warrior Odysseus developed the strategy: The wooden horse Found : a skilled artisan (woodcarver)- made a horse hollow and big enough for a whole squad of men.

The Plan While hundreds fit into the horse the many others would clear out camp and hide. Also having some ships set sail back to Greece ( pretending). In reality they would hide by the nearest islands until word came out. Also, one Greek (Sinon) would be left behind with a story to convince/persuade the Trojans to take the horse into the city of Troy.

So when dawn came, the Trojans were amazed : seeing the Greek camp deserted and a giant wooden horse they began to feast and celebrate. Then, Sinon was found and questioned by the King of Troy. Sinon explained about the horse: Wooden horse made as an offering to Athena. It was made huge so Trojans would have a hard time getting it into Troy. Greeks hoped Trojans would destroy it so it would bring a horrible wrath to the Trojans. Yet if somehow the Trojans could get wooden horse into Troy, then the Trojans would win the favor of Athena (Support). By midnight the horse was inside Troy and Odysseus and his army came out. City of Troy was burned and Trojans were taken by surprise.
