Warm Up Write the formula (remember you need to look at charge!) If you have no idea how to do it, just write the charges for each: Calcium and Fluorine CaF 2 Sodium and Oxygen Na 2 O Magnesium and Sulfur MgS Lithium and Chlorine LiCl Cesium and Iodine CsI

Unit Five, Day One Kimrey 11 October 2012 Chemistry: Ionic Nomenclature

General Pattern for Ionic compounds Binary Compounds - Write the name of the first element then write the beginning of the second element plus –ide Polyatomic compounds – Write the name of the first element plus the name of the polyatomic ion. Transition metal compounds – Write the name of the first element with the oxidation number (charge) in parenthesis then write the beginning of the second element plus –ide.

Tips Anions (nonmetal ions) are the element names with –ide at the end. ex. Chloride, oxide, and fluoride Polyatomic ions never change their names. Metals not in column 1 or 2 must have roman numerals to show their charge.

Examples NaClCuO LiOHPbSO 4 Ca(NO 3 ) 2 Fe 2 O 3

Review PbF 2 Lead (II) Fluoride CuCl 3 Copper (III) Chloride FePO 4 Iron (III) Phosphate Ni(NO 3 ) 2 Nickel (II) Nitrate

Practice Name The Following Fe(OH) 3 Iron (III) Hydroxide CoSO 4 Cobalt (II) Sulfate NiF 2 Nickel (II) Fluoride CuNO 3 Copper (I) Nitrate Ca(OH) 2 Calcium hydroxide Write the formulas for… Manganese (II) Nitrate Mn(NO 3 ) 2 Yttrium (III) Chloride YCl 3 Nickel (II) Sulfate NiSO 4 Magnesium Bromide MgBr 2 Lead (IV) Sulfate Pb(SO 4 ) 2

Correct the following Names and write the formula Magnesium (II) Sulfate Magnesium Sulfate; MgSO 4 Iron dichloride Iron (II) Chloride; FeCl 2 Lead (IV) disulfide Lead (IV) Sulfide; PbS 2 Potassium Hydroxide ; KOH
